UPDATE:
The USGS site is reporting it as being 5.2 on the Richter scale at a depth of 9.9km.

Magnitude 5.2 - NEAR THE SOUTHEAST COAST OF AUSTRALIA

More news to follow when the local outlets pull their fingers out and provide some coverage.

LUCKILY, melbourne is NOT haiti!

Residents of suburbs including Abbotsford, Brunswick, Coburg, Essendon, Narre Warren, Bundoora, Berwick, Windsor tweeted about the quake.

Within minutes it was the top Twitter-trending topic in Australia.

Near the epicentre of the quake, Moe police constable Chris Hand was enjoying a cup of coffee when it hit.

"I had the cup sitting on the table and it spilled over," Const Hand said.

"We've had a lot of calls but no one is reporting any damage or injuries at this stage.

"It was a decent-size rumble, the biggest I've ever felt.

"The ground moved for 15 to 20 seconds."

Ron Smith from Kew said his whole house shook. "We heard a roar and thought it was the wind," he said.

"The floor and the walls shook, the whole house shook."

Jan Turnbull of East Bentleigh was in bed when the room started moving. "My lamps were shaking and the windows were rattling, it was quite strong," she said.

It's possible there was not ONE damaged house. Any deaths or injuries are probably limted in number and due to an unfortunate event. I was in one BIG earthquake, but a car was TOTALLED by an event that a FAR smaller earthquake would have caused. A couple people took it upon themselves to "clean" these emblems on the apartment building. They NORMALLY would have been anchored to the wall, but they took them off. I'm surprised they could lift them, they could have been like 50 pounds EACH. Anyway, they placed them on top of the balcony railing. When the earthquake happened, they flew down, and totalled a car. They were heavy enough that the only thing stopping the damage was the engine block. If that had been a person, the damage would have been severe and irreparable, assuming the person even survived.

Yeah, l was in my room when it hit, as someone said, it felt like standing on top of a washing machine.

And l could hear a rumbling sound like lightening outside, which eventually dissipated.

Seriously cool, but my Mother wasn't crazy about it!

No, damage!

But the expensive glassware was vibrating in the glass cabinet!

And the fluorescent light was still vibrating after it dissipated.

The interesting thing was, the floors of the house started moving, but it took a second or two for the distant lighting or train sound, as some have called it, to catch up!

Obviously the shock wave took longer to arrive!

Seriously cool and fun, but l think that if l lived in Moe, and had cups of coffee spill over, it probably would have got more scary than fun.

Last time this happened was about 15 to 20 years ago!

It was only a 5.2 - but it was also only 9.9 km deep so there might be some damage reports coming in soon. Probably no fatalities - or only a couple if any. It's really rare for a 5 mag to result in fatalities. Probably strong enough to produce a hella lot of dirty undies though.

Hmmmmm, they said the last time this happened was in 1982, time flies!

And there was about 60 aftershocks, l felt and heard another one at 3.35 am, this time with the house creaking and a distant rumbling noise that dissipated within a few seconds!

I suppose the koalas got in on the act, and jumped from the trees all at once!. If the wombats join in, Australia is done for. LOL

No, a few concrete blocks, (or something like that) fell on a parked car, but no one was inside.

And apart from a police officer getting his coffee spilling all over his table, in Moe, l think that was it?

Mother nature can put on some pretty impressive displays sometimes!

My son was in Digger's Rest (a suburb of Melbourne) yesterday and he felt it.
He said it sounded like someone was banging on the windows and the walls
were shaking a bit. Didn't seem to faze him too much though. I think he thought it
was cool

So apart from a bit of damage done to the local Woolies, there was no real damage done.

People from the area are even making jokes about it.

I got this one from someone in Churchill (near Moe).

After the earthquake there are early estimates that there has been $3 million of improvements done.

My whole place shook. I did not know what happened but my landlady knocked on my door to check on me and told me it was a quake. I thought for a stupid moment that the possums had gotten heavier. But no damage and I don't know anybody that had damage but Facebook really lit up with comments. I was on my computer and I checked it out and most people I know had felt it too. 5.3 on the Richter scale and the biggest one in Australia in 109 years.

I am just grateful it wasn't worse.

We are called the Lucky Country and I believe that is one of the reasons.
