New assessments of Spain's cave paintings, using sophisticated modern age-testing techniques, suggest that they had to be made by Neanderthals, made before homo sapiens from Africa arrived in Europe.

Art work by Neanderthals suggest they were much smarter and more sensitive and delicate than previously believed

I watched a documentary on (i forget which channel) which showed some interesting new details that were discovered about Neanderthals however this was not shown in the documentary. It was believed that we initially worked together with the Neanderthals however that soon lead to conflicts of resources and our species simply "out competed" the Neanderthals. Also they claimed there is a theory that we may have even hunted and eaten other human species during the earlier states of our evolution. Pretty interesting stuff.

I did a report for my newsletter awhile back about Neanderthal speech. Their vocal chords were not as flexible as ours and were restricted on verbal communications because of it. Had they been able to communicate with us better, they might still be around today. In my report I have a tape a scientist made of what a Neanderthal would have sounded like saying the letter "a". If anyone wants to hear that, when I have time I'll go back and lookup the link to that newsletter.

There is compelling evidence of Neanderthal genes in all people, except from some populations in Africa. I suspect that Neanderthals were largely wiped out by diseases brought in by the first homo sapiens arriving from Africa before larger migrations out of Africa took place. Basque may have evolved out of Neanderthal languages -- that could explain why the language of the Ainu of Japan is so similar to the Basque language.
