Nobody Writes Anything Anymore, Says Study

Have any of you picked up a pen and paper to scrawl some note or jot down a quick to do list only to find your hand muscles have gone slack and your once-clear, familiar handwriting now crooked and forced? I have. Sometimes. It's really rather sad.

The results of a study commissioned by the online stationer Docmail show that I'm not alone--and that we're all getting a little lazy in the writing department: the average time since an adult last wrote by hand, the study showed, was 41 days. 41 days! What's more, 1-in-3 of us, the research showed, has not had cause to write anything the old fashioned way for more than six months. Basically, it's holiday thank-you cards or bust.

This is both appalling and not at all.

Really, why should we fetishize pen-and-ink notation? Electronic correspondence is environmentally greener, quicker to send/receive, and--best of all!--avoids the nasty taste of a licked stamp. Plus, there are plenty of other ways to keep our fingers nimble and our hands occupied.

Writing is dead. Long live writing!

If you want to exercise your writing muscles, fill a balloon with sand, glue it around a pen or pencil and write:
    <snip>

I have to write things down to imprint them onto my old brain but some kids today won't even have to learn cursive. So I guess it's true.

  • I'm pretty good at cursing when I write...but not very good at cursive...

plus - the spell check is much more laborius...(sp?) laborious...

And how is it, women always seem to have perfect penmanship? I have seen letters written before I could swear were done by a machine...only to find an author at the other end with a "pink my little pony sparkle plenty" pen! :p

It's quite amazing! Because of this phenomena, copying an excuse as to "why I was not in school yesterday" (signed, "my Mom") made forgery astoundingly easy!

The notebook by my bedstand fills up regularly from the notes I jot down from the books I read. Guess I'm not one of the "nobody" ...maybe that means I'm somebody!

I write often. I keep pads and pens all over the house. It's hard to believe I still remember shorthand. The old Gregg shorthand.

It comes in really handy when I want to take down a lot of info fast and one more benefit - I can write stuff I don't want hubby to read. : )

WOW, my mother apparently stopped writing shorthand over like 35 years ago! If I want to keep things secret, I write hints, code, or mix languages. Or a combination of those.

I'm guilty of writing by hand every once in a while (when the ink actually flows from the pen). But I don't keep books anymore. My entire library, which once covered walls, is now down to a dozen books -- and will be fewer when I need the space for more storage.

For some reason, that's always been my experience with writing by hand. I went to school in the pre-internet age and always had trouble with handwriting which is one reason I was an underachiever. I think that's why I did a lot better in college, which was during the dawn of word processors.

So, no, I hardly ever write by hand if I have any other alternative

BTW when I was 13, I asked for, and got, a TYPEWRITER! I STILL try to bring a pad of paper, and a few pens. For some reason, a few weeks ago, a person setup a computer for me, and only let me see the setup info for like 5 seconds. The average person will take several MINUTES and attempts to remember such things. As soon as I could, I had to copy it down. Obviously, I could NOT use the computer.

Some time back, I tried to remember the last time I even READ! DUH, I read EVERY DAY! Maybe not german, french, spanish, danish, or hindi, but certainly english. I just never really think about it. As for German, French, Danish or Hindi, I TRY to read them some. Sadly, I have trouble with devanegari since it is so foreign, and I have read it so little. At least the rest came quickly and stuck.

I've got pens and paper all over the place even in the jeep. I write all kinds of stuff and with frequency. Who the heck did this study? Was it a kid looking for a soc grade? He fails.
