There's a big fire in my town...

There's a big fire less than a couple of miles from my house. I should be OK, but everyone's on stand-by. Thing is, it's so dry here you never know if an ember will start another fire and there's big, dry trees everywhere. There's helicopters and an airplane trying to fight it.

    Good luck and be careful.
I have some other friends out there around Loveland (I think) who where pretty close to the fires.

The High Park fire is the big one on the news and is fairly close to Loveland. It's in the same county I live in, but isn't a threat to me personally. But the whole area is so dry...I have my "go bag" ready to go.

Last I heard, the one here in town has destroyed 7 buildings. Let's hope they get it under control soon.

  • How are you set for fire-break? Try to eliminate as much hazard nearby as a possible...ie: build a fireline, cut dry brush etc. - cistern or water storage if you lose hose pressure - (you probably already do all this, but...)

You might also try a Raindance...or pray for rain...

What a terrible feeling. Last summer this part of Texas was a crispy critter. There was a huge fire about 40 miles east of us. I packed up some camping gear, fueled the Jeep and had our bug out stuff ready to go.

I saw that on the news Kurt. I'll be sending positive thoughts your way and hopes of rain.

Be prepared though, okay? There were not too many exit routes here but with a four wheeler, we wouldn't have to stay on the road. I got our photos out and packed the most important ones in one box. Everything we would take with us if we had to leave was right by the front door.

    Stay safe.

I haven't heard anything, but the helicopters seemed to stop about 10:30 pm last night. I could hear them non-stop until then. I live between the fire and a lake they were using to get water.

I wasn't ever in danger, my only worries were this thing would get out of control and I wouldn't have a home.

Update: Google News reports they are "mopping up" now and that 21 buildings were burned.

"Luckily", there's a bigger fire in High Park, which is about 15 miles away (as the crow flies), so they had some firefighting helicopters and a plane they diverted here very quickly.

    OMG. That is scary.

Does it seem that there are more fires, droughts, floods, tornadoes.. now than before? Or is it that I'm older and watch the news?

Watching the weather channel now to see if there's any rain heading your way.

Kurt, I have been wondering if you were affected by these fires. I keep checking to see if you are online!

Certainly glad to hear your home has survived thus far. Like others have said, don't take any chances. Do you have any means of knowing the fire is headed your way during your sleeping hours?

That picture sure is scary. I'm just enjoying my first cup of coffee, so will scan through the tv channels and try to get some updates on the fires.

Stay safe and please keep us posted.

Glad you are ok for now - such an early, bad fire season has to be seriously frightening.

I saw the High Park fire on the news this week and it was a shock to hear at the time it was "0%" contained while seeing the huge amount of smoke and flames on the screen. Firefighters are going to be busy this year, I'm afraid.

It's now the second largest fire in state history. These pine trees are so dry and are perfect fuel for fires.

And I am a little frightened, not now but at the possibiities...I live in the middle of 60-80 ft tall ponderosa pines. Plus, I'm living in a valley where there's only a couple of ways out of town, one is blocked by the fire.

    Good luck Kurt,

About 8 years ago my neighbor set a field on fire that's between our houses (approx. 1/4 mile distance), that fire came within 10 feet of burning my house, I was totally freaking out trying to get the frozen garden hose to work. That fire just kept getting closer & closer...

About the same time I got the frozen garden hose to work, the fire dept. pulled up in the driveway & saved our house/property from burning.

That same fire burnt all the way up against the back wall of a barn that I stored ATVs, cars, mowers, etc...

But...The first 12 minutes of local news was "Colorado Burning". There's so many fires going on here they've dedicated much of the news to them.

What a tragedy - saw all the different fires in CO on the news - really ominous. Hope you are still holding out. Can you hose down the house?

I remember once I was in a forest fire in Buck Meadows (below Yosemite) - tiny little community - the fire was bad enough, but then there were the planes for that war-like atmosphere, and then the prison gang all dressed in orange that they brought in to fight it -

... but the worst was having the embers burning all around the house - what - just embers -let them burn out - right. sleep tight - I don't think so....

... then i moved back to the city!! hello good bye!

Yeah...the fire in my town is in Estes Park. It's over by the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park on the way to Trail Ridge Road. That part of town was evacuated yesterday.

The fire was moving NE, which would be into town, but they seem to have it under control now. I live E of the fire, so NE gets my attention.

For those that don't know, Trail Ridge Road was at one time the highest paved road in the World. It's 54 miles to Grand Lake Colorado, but as the crow flies it's something like only 7 miles. The driving distance is because of all the switchbacks to get over Long's Peak.

Every Fall some flatlander drives off Trail Ridge and they don't find them until Spring thaw:

Just heard on the radio that 248 homes have gone up so far. Wow. Too bad you didn't get the rain they just had in northern Minnesota, it's flooding big time up there. They say 50-80 million in damages just to the infrastructure alone.

Still sending good thoughts your way. I've got a buddy in Denver and one in Rocky Ford too. Might still have cousins in Colorado Springs, lost track of them over the years.

Things are fine around here now...

But last night there was another small fire just outside of Boulder that was creating evacuation plans. It's just sad watching my state on fire and there's not much you can do except hope for rain.

We may get some rain Friday, but it will be isolated thunder storms, and the last thing we need is lightning right now.

Boulder and the Springs, too? Jeez. This breaks my heart.

We've had so much rain here that everyone is sick of it. I wish it would blow inland to ya. Seems like they didn't stop the urban spread out there in time. I was astounded at how much forestry had been cut last time I went through. It was too dry in the first place some years.

The Springs fire is much much worse right now...But the Boulder fire could be scary too.

The Boulder fire is about 200 acres on Flagstaff Mtn, about a mile and a half outside of town.

Flagstaff is very personal for me...It's where members of my family who passed away have had their ashes scattered. Seeing it burn is tough.

The thing with these fires is that if the wind kicks up it acts like a bellows and the fires really spread. This is what happened to the Springs fire yesterday. The wind decided to blow and the fire more than doubled in size in a very short time. I hope the wind doesn't fan the fires any more...

Last I heard, 265 homes in the High Park fire were destroyed and the Springs fire has taken over 100 homes, and is threatening many more. These numbers are probably higher now.

News on the Boulder fire (about an hour ago):

When I was younger, we'd drive up Flagstaff to watch the fireworks shows on the 4th of July.

It's the coolest place to watch fireworks. The fireworks set off in Boulder would be below eye level. And in the distance, you could see about a dozen more fireworks shows in the Denver area.

Yeah, I'm familiar with Flagstaff. The winds, too. I used to park my jimmy beside my house up there in Empire and the side that faced away from the house actually sand blasted clean from those winds and the sand that they blew. Every spring up there you will see people nailing their roofs back down. It was relentless. But it wasn't so dry back then either. There's only about 1/3 of the drought area there was about 5 years ago. I was hoping CO would pull out of it - and thought that due to its location that it would. Guess I was wrong. Makes me want to go up to Central City and remove every damned house they've built since 1991 and replant the trees. I'm wondering if any of the streams are still running or if they've dried up, too.

The news said this is the worst fire season in all of Colorado's history. It is really a shame - it is such a beautiful state - although I have only been there in the snow season.

It hurts my feelings when even one tree is lost - it must be devastating to see all the beauty turn to charcoal. It will take what - centuries? to grow it all back -

I guess that is what to do is imagine all the little baby trees that will be 'coming out' someday.

It some areas, the fires are worse due to the bark beetle killing big patches of trees. These dead trees are really good fuel for fires.

Fires are part of healthy forests and pine trees depend on them. But it's still hard to watch and have to hope that they don't get too big and out of control.

The scary part is, August is usually when the real fire hazards are around here. I just hope things don't get worse. Many communities have already canceled fireworks shows because of the hazard.

The Colorado Springs fire isn't close at all...Probably 100 miles away.

The High Park Fire, which is larger as far as acreage is in the same county I live in, and is probably 15 miles away as the crow flies...But it's almost contained now and has been moving away from me the whole time.

The Boulder Flagstaff fire was about 30 miles away, but wasn't a threat to me.

The big threat was the first one I posted about. It was less than two miles away and moving in my general direction. But they got that one out quickly.

Actually, I live on the side of a mountain about 8500 feet above sea level. It's much cooler up here than at lower elevations.

The first 15 seconds of this video were taken 10 steps from my front door. I took this 2 months ago, before the fires. The rest of the video show elk that are right in town. And the lake is the one the helicopters were using to fill up with water to fight the fire.

It's hard to get the perspective, but you should see that I'm "above" the valley below. When I pan the camera to the left, that's in the direction the fire was.

Also, look at all the pine trees around the homes. That's the scary part of fires around here:

They have the firefighters from our area (Central OR) over there fighting. We're still getting rains. Not pleasant, but our forests probably won't burn this summer.

I was watching the news tonight & they showed houses that had been looted while home owners were evacuated from their homes, one lady had her car stolen out of the garage.

That's two wrongs rolled into one, the home owners are already stressed from the fire/evacuation, then someone steals from their home.

Looting is one of the lowest crimes there is...I would be for double the punishment for the same crime if it is done during looting.
