Does anyone here know of sites that teach guitar for free? It would be better if they have video tutorials.
Thanks in advance.

There are some training videos here: howtoplayanyguitar (dot) net - In the upper bar click on: Learn To Play Guitar Videos also go to YouTube and type in the search bar: guitar lessons - there are tons of them to choose from.
Hope your training goes well..... Lou

You'd find it easier if you used your hands.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

Go to South America to learn to play guitar. There are so many great guitar players there, it is freakish.

      ,
Actually, not such a bad idea - I knew a fellow who was a really amazing guitarist - the way it seemed he could pick up a tune was almost savant - even songs he had never heard before, he could play after hearing once...

I asked him where he learned to play once, and he said he was just a 'hippie' traveling around Europe, and ended up in (Segovia? or Seville?) Spain, where virtually everybody and their sister plays guitar. The town is all about guitars. He just 'picked it up' from the buskers on the street, and people just playing on their doorsteps - he never had any other instruction, and he was amazing...yet, his old guitar was so beat up, it looked like he got it from Willie Nelson

There are sites on the internet that let you take free lessons to see if that is what suits you. Self taught is ok as well with books and dvds but they lack interaction and you may be learning some bad habits.
I would suggest do some of your own research into learning guitar and find something that suits your lifestyle as well as budget.

There's a great exercise for developing picking, fingering and hand-eye co-ordination. It's called the chromatic exercise. Trust me, as boring and unmusical as it is, it is the best thing you can do to get things rolling. It's kinda like the Karate Kid painting the fence etc., doesn't appear to be doing anything, but you notice the improvement in your playing when you do it regularly.

Here's a random video I found that is very good. Check his picking hand as well, all down-up-down-up. Start with a downstroke and keep it alternate - never 2 ups or downs in a row, always alternate picking. As he says, the descending pattern is quite harder.

I only do it using the ascending pattern and I work my way down to the 12th fret at least, then work my way back up the neck. Otherwise your hand gets sore too quickly and it helps to get used to the whole fretboard anyway. I use this before I play each week and it really helps get you loosened up and in the zone more, just like warming up for any activity does. I find it clears the mind as well.

Put youtube forward slash in front of this. (hope that's ok)

Don't confuse yourself with learning too many things, or you'll overwhelm yourself. This is all you need, 20 minutes a day 3 times a week minimum. 30 minutes 5 days would be great. Practise without the TV on or any other distractions.

Learn an open chord each week and in a few months you'll be good. Everything he says is pretty good advice and you can tell he's a decent player.

In that case, the site I linked to in post #8 sounds perfect for you. It's starts at the very beginning, but if you're more advanced you can find specific video tutorials for just what you want to learn.
