A High Court judge has ruled that police search warrants used to seize property from Kim Dotcom were illegal.

Justice Helen Winkelmann found that the warrants used did not properly describe the offences to which they were related.

The FBI agents had been accused of underhanded behaviour by Dotcom's lawyers in the High Court after they secretly copied data from his computers and took it overseas.

    Illegal?

    Well, at least the the crime is being handled the same way that guy runs illegal sites (getting what he dished out). :rolleyes:

    If megaupload goes down, then so should youtube and a ton of other sites. That website was just a medium - It was the users that added the copyrighted material to the site - just as they do on youtube all of the time.

      YouTube have measures in place to prevent copyrighted material from being hosted on their site. Some of it is automatic.

      There won't ever be a 100% clean site. It's a cat and mouse game. It's not likely to stop anytime soon.

      The system probably isn't as effective as it could be though....

      Megauploads sole purpose was to provide stolen content, without the stolen content they would have had little traffic. The owner of megauplod was bringing in 40+ million per year from the stolen content he provided access to.

      Youtube is actually hardcore about copyright content. YT has no interest in providing stolen content like megaupload did.

    Somehow, I think Dotcom is going down eventually. There will be some legal wrangling as there always is, but in the end he's going to do the time.

    There were a lot of legitimate uses for mega-upload. In fact I'm willing to bet that there was a time when nearly half of the WSOs coming out of this very website were being downloaded from megaupload. So their sole purpose was not to provide stolen content. I know a lot of it traveled through there, but a lot of it travels through any website that provides it's users any sort of internet hosting.

    "Stealing" copyrighted material has been going on for years before the internet came along.

    How many people have cassettes of music that was never paid for?

    How many have videotapes of tv shows and/or movies that were never paid for?

    All the internet has done has made it easier/faster/more efficient to share/distribute stuff that hasn't been paid for.

    I'm not condoning any of this, however the cat is out of the bag. Getting it back in is going to be a hard task. Very hard indeed.
