I Just Did Something I Don't Like to Do...

There are many new members joining this forum every day. It's hard to keep up with welcoming all of them. And it's difficult to report those who are blatantly breaking the rules when you know in your heart they probably don't know that's exactly what they are doing; it's easy to report those who do because you know they are doing so deliberately.

But when newcomer comes in with a first post that is 'presumptuous' I really see red.

So what I did was, I posted a snarky reply to a new poster's first message here in the OT Forum today. And I left it there. Sometimes I do post snarky replies in a fit of passion, then delete the post later. I certainly don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, especially not newcomers. But sometimes...

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

When I first came here years ago, one of my very first posts contained a link to Ken (you know who) Site BI site. With an affiliate link.

I was both shocked and dismayed to find that other members of the forum blasted me for posting this information and for having an affiliate link in my signature.

I was devastated. I thought I had posted something of value. I had spent a lot of time looking for relevant info about this topic, and when nothing showed up, I thought I was really posting something new and exciting.

I also didn't know what an affiliate link was.

I certainly found out fast enough.

I think I was even banned for a while.

Sitting in my wee house way back in the boonies, I licked my wounds and felt very hurt, humiliated and insulted. Not nice feelings.

But once I understood what I had done wrong, I 'fessed up' and started over. I started over because I knew that I was on to a good thing here at the WF, and I wanted to be part of it.

That's not to say that I still don't post things that get instantly deleted or jumped upon by fellow members. I'm a slow learner at times. However, I've come to see that getting 'jumped on' (or deleted) in this forum can be a good thing.

So that's why I left my post intact.

If new members come here, learn from and move on from these types of responses to their posts—then that is a good thing. If not, they are the losers after all is said and done.

Newbies can get roasted fast in the OT. They are either reported and deleted or just get bbq'd. The fun stuff starts when you post something snarky when a spammer hits and Paul or one of the others accidentally bans YOUR account, too, because of the proximity to the one they are actually after.

So just a head's up to be careful in here if you are feeling playful with a spammer. Accidental banning doesn't happen often, but it does happen. A lot of us just report posts now instead of lighting the grill just to avoid such accidents. Still - some stuff you've just got to grill and that's all there is to it.

    I hear you, Sal.

I also appreciate when people are kind with me, so it really does go against the grain when I get into the snark mode!

Just a note: Is that Rickie in your avatar? He reminds me so much of my own 'black and tan.'

Here's a picture of her taken in my back yard - best I could find on short notice.

Our precious Golden Retriever and my wee French Bulldog have already crossed the rainbow bridge - I sure miss them. My black and tan gal is getting on, as well. (The frenchie was always going in a different direction from the other two - they sure have minds of their own.)

Yes, that's Ricky - my little dog that thinks dogs should have 9 lives, too. His first rescue was simple - give him a home. The second one took major research and dedication, but that's the result. He's getting old now and it's showing but he sure is a happy dog now.

Yeah, I always thought that was kind of unfair, that a cat got '9 lives' and dog only got 1 - but then I realized a dog only needed one, to make a big impact

As a new person, I appreciate your comments. I cleverly decided to leave all links/hype out of posts until I have gotten a feel for the community, and just contribute a few words here and there

    I.M,
You did what I thought about doing.
Maybe part of it is age,but when you see first posts like that one, then my first impression is not good.
I make mistakes.Sometimes I snap at those that really had good intentions, and sometimes even if I misread the intentions and think they are being a smartass, sometimes I will try to give good advice.
That being said, I still feel most of the new posts are made by those with no concept what this or almost any other forum is about,so I daon't have a problem not handling them with kid gloves.
