73 years before, to be exact. They've been around for a loooooong time and, as well as all the above, they create/make/sell pretty much anything you can think of from planes to ships to trains to turbines to helicopters to heavy weapons to washing machines to memory cards to microchips to wire to electric bottle openers. They're even one of the largest life insurance companies on the planet.

My phone, laptop, tablet, television, oven, and fridge were all made by Samsung. They even made the damn extractor fan over the cooker. If I had the means to check, I'd probably find they made the guts of pretty much everything else in my house that runs power through it too.

And that's the problem. I don't care they have more money than anyone else, I care about their products. And as far as I know, in almost all the markets you've mentioned there are better products made by smaller companies that mostly focus on that type of products.

Look at Sony. I don't know their professional line, but their consumer line is mediocre. They have decent phones, decent laptops (but expensive!), decent TVs, decent digital cameras and so on an so forth. They might have lots of money, but that's not going to help me much. In the majority of markets where Sony is present, there are other market leaders other than Sony.

What I want is someone who is great at what I'm interested in, and you can't really be great at everything if you're interested in too many things. It seems to me that too many companies tend to approach the "supermarket" model, where they sell everything they can even if they aren't very good at it, just to please the shareholders. (Take a loot at the clothes in your supermarket next time you shop for groceries.)

So I defend Apple because even if they have a short line of products, their products are great, not just good.

You can if you're a 70-something-year-old multinational conglomerate with 350,000 top scientists, engineers, and technicians on your payroll... including making great touch screens for your (self-appointed) arch-rival who is unable to do so themselves.

Let us leave this here. I'm not going to change my opinion, and I have a strong suspicion you won't either.

As Boris (The Animal) would say: Let's agree to disagree.

I think they do yes. Everytime an Iphone is sold Samsung make money from it.

Yes, it looks like it will have a huge effect Dennis, epecially if Apple can get the phones and tablets pulled off the market:

"Apple lawyer plans to formally demand Samsung pull its most popular cellphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market. They also can ask the judge to triple the damages to $3 billion. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh will decide those issues along with Samsung's demand she overturn the jury's verdict in several weeks.

I don't know if $1 billion is hugely significant to Apple or Samsung," Marlett said. "But there is a social cost here. As a company, you don't want to be known as someone who steals from someone else. I am sure Samsung wants to be known as an innovator, especially since a lot of Asian companies have become known for copying the designs of innovators."

Yeah, this is quite the development. Of course, a billion dollars is significant to both companies, so that part of Marlett's comment is kind of silly, but the part about there being a social cost is very insightful. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out in the end.

I actually thought it was Lenovo before I saw the sentence on washer and driers. But still, it is about to displace HP to become the largest PC maker in the world.

Lenovo was already a large Chinese computer manufacturer who was subcontracted by IBM to make personal computers for them. Before then, it was known as Legend computers and they had their own line of computers and was a major player in the China market.

The IBM personal computer division was then sold by IBM to Legend Computers which then renamed itself Lenovo. Even now, there are two separate lines of Lenovo computers. One from the original IBM line (Thinkpad and ThinkCenter) and the other which is completely Lenovo (Legend) in origin.

I've heard the news, and I in my opinion, the decision was correct because that's how I see Samsung and Android: a copy of iPhone and iOS. They just look (or at least looked) too similar. Take a look at Windows Phone 7 phones and operating system, they don't resemble Apple as much. How were they able to do it, and why wasn't Samsung able as well?

Even if Samsung phones are great, and even if they had their own technology developed and so on and so forth, they have to admit it: they stole from Apple even if was just at the beginning. So how is that going to look in the eyes of people? Not good, not good at all.

What would really be sick is Samsung to be forced to admit they stole ideas from Apple by putting up a big red header on their website using the Impact font.
