What Do I Do Next? Hot Domain Name

Hi,

I had a mall recently open in my area. I went online to find out about the mall and realized they had not registered the domain ( I guess since it is not entirely constructed yet) and I purchased it. I definitely know that the property owner will want and need this domain. I found the mall property owners online and was thinking about sending them a letter. How much should I be asking for? I don't want to cheat myself but I also don't want to be greedy and lose out on a possible money maker. How do I determine how much to ask for?

Chances are high you won't get anything. You'll be accused of cybersquatting and they'll send you a lawyers letter to hand it over.

The name of the mall is pretty generic. I do not see it as being a trade name. I found it pretty unbelievable when I was looking trying to see which stores were coming to town to find there was actually no site up yet. There was already a gym, a Target and Ram restaurant open in the complex. With all that marketing and preparation for this mall going on....how did they not secure the domain name?? I just stumbled upon it and bought the domain. I guess I have a mind for business and it was a knee jerk reaction to secure the domain. I think it would be cheaper to pay me a couple of grand than to spend thousands on a lawyer. I'm not greedy. I'll just hold my course and see what happens. I guess it will be a learning experience for me.

Offer to build them a custom website using that domain, or charge a monthly maintenance fee. I have done this myself a few times when new businesses open up. You should be able to get $10,000 easily for a package deal of a few pages, and charge a monthly fee of say $50/month. Or just sell the domain for as much as the market will bear, typically a few hundred dollars or a few thousand if it really is a unique name for the business. No lawyer is going to come near you for such small amounts.

Just send them an email say hey I have this domain name. Do you want it. If they are iffy just say like $200 and keep the profit. If they seem like they really need it. Well then $1,000 or more. Good Luck!

Thanks for the response guys. I think I am going to go out to the mall and take some pictures of the place and develop that website. I am curious to see what kind of traffic this site will get and may just put up an adsense or Yahoo ads stripe on the side. If the company wants to buy it from me they can. If not... I will leave up the site to get some Adsense revenue off it.
