This certainly is scary. I'm sure it doesn't matter what country you might go to and randomly interview people on the street—you'd find the same thing.

Yeah, finished watching "Shaun of the Dammed" with plenty of zombies, and this video was far more scarier!

I would like to know how many stupid Americans they picked out of ?.

I am sure it wasn't 100, Although in AU, we have our own idiots, and the scary thing is, some have high positions in our country!

      Seriously scary.

Sadly I disagree. The dumbing down of America has been going on at least for 2-3 decades now.

Uh, I hope that was a joke. As far as I know there is no "Shaun of the Dammed" , but there is a "Shaun of the Dead"

The fact is some people don't know about religions and other topics simply because they don't care for them and I commend them for that.

Admitedly there's plain ignorance in some cases but there are lots of topics in the world that a person need not know and go about their life swimmingly - no different from the person who generated the subs for that video who doesn't know how to spell "idea" (0:25). He or she could spend the rest of their life spelling "idea" in that way and it won't make a scrap of difference to their quality of life unless their job happens to invlove writing or proofreading.

To paraphrase Napolean Hill, a person needs to know only what they need to know. This is the very reason why people have specialist subjects rather than strike to be a jack of all. You see, the guy who answers a question incorrectly about a religion for example might have had his head stuck into others concerns. He may be awesome at playing guitar. Hypothetically, how awesome is the guy interviewing at guitar? I'm sure some people fill their heads so much with stuff they need not know they actually overlook which information is actually important. Variety is the spice of life and people are wired differently to have their own interests and focus in different areas. If everyone was just a barrel of the same trivia the world would be a monotonous place.

In the UK there's a series of programmes that follow a "100 Worst" or "100 Most Annoying People" theme. Ironically the people who are infront of the camera slating people in the public eye branding them as "The Most Annoying People" are actually quite annoying themselves.

As a side note, when a random sticks a microphone and camera in your face and asks an obvious question, if a person isn't dumbfounded by shock alone, they'll automatically assume it's a trick question.

Yeah, probably right, l just caught the end, you know, go to the house, kill our Uncle, have a cup of tea!

Find someplace to have a smoke, etc.....

Classic Zombie film, l like the part where they say, "zombies make excellent lower paid workers, like trolly collectors," etc.

But as that video has shown idiocy covers all social economic areas, it's how you use your time, that counts!

Sting started out collecting tickets on a bus, thankfully he ditched that, and formed a band instead!

It isn't hard to make a video like that. Just edit out anyone who gives the right answer. The question to ask is why this video was made. The answer is in the title they gave it, they wanted to portray Americans as stupid, but a video like that could be made in any country in the world.

Why did the person want to portray Americans as stupid? There is an undisclosed agenda/motivation that I'm guessing most people won't consider because they're busy being entertained.

Maybe in some cases but since they questions asked are in fact the basic educational things that are supposedly covered in our educational system, if is not that they don't know it because they chose not to know it.
It comes down to our educational system failed them,or they chose to be ignorant. Which,I don't know. But I certainly can't commend either of those.

      Dennis,
no it isn't hard to make a video like that. As to why a video like that was made? Because ,at least here in the states the general public eats it up.
Spend a week watching each different late night show and you will see some variation of these stupid videos. Leno is the one that seems to make the most insulting ones, but I have to admit I really don't watch any of them anymore.
And hidden agenda or not,I don't know. I know the average educational level of Americans have dropped below high school level.

I also know that Comcrap, has a daily section devoted to crap videos like this.

Kim, you and I agree on more things than not, but I think you're painting with a pretty broad brush here. For example, the "coalition of the willing" wouldn't be something any adults learned in school, kids maybe, but the phrase didn't come about until 1994. I watch maybe an hour of television a month. Some people don't watch any. I wouldn't expect anyone who doesn't watch TV to know the answer to that question.

I'm not defending the school system because I agree it's a mess, but asking older Americans questions they should have learned in school can be misleading. We've forgotten a lot, and a lot has changed. More importantly though...

These "stupid American" videos - it's a series - are product by CNNN, and their website is copyrighted by the Australian Broadcasting Company. That leads to the question, why is this Australian company trying portray Americans as stupid instead of their own citizens or those of nearer countires? Like I said, in my opinion there is a hidden agenda.

That video was from The Chaser crew. During the 2007 (Australian) election they did interviews with Australians about their thoughts on the election. Invariably, all the people shown were stupid, and each interview ended with a "stamp" saying "This Person Votes".
      For example:

And here's another one showing what bright sparks Aussies are:

So Dennis is right, they set out to portray Americans as being dumb by showing people who fit that category. You could make the same sort of video anywhere in the world.

    The video itself is stupid.

Media always leaves out things that don't pump up a story.

The clueless people in the video was probably 0.01% of the people polled.

If I drive around for a week or so, I could find enough stupid people in any country for a video.

    Dennis,
you are right in the aspect that things like the "coalition of the willing",might not be known to everyone, because to be honest,I've never heard of it either.
And I will even admit that I can't at this second name all the countries that belong to the "axis of evil",though I could at the time it was a current topic of discussion. But come on, name a country that starts with a "U"?? There is no excuse for anyone to not get that if they went past the 6th grade.

While I didn't know the stupid American videos were a series, what I said still stands true.Every single late night American talk show has their own versions of them. Do I think they are funny? Not in the least, but that goes back to my belief that 99% of what's on TV nowadays is total crap.

What surprises me even more is that I googled Australian Broadcasting Company and it appears to be a government sanctioned radio operation, not television. Looking at CNNN it does appear to be a site with an agenda, and not a pretty one.

SO I'm in agreement with a lot of what you said above.

But I'd be willing to do this (when the temperature finally drops).
We have a large college downtown. Lets come up with a list of 10 questions between us on the forum here that we think the average person should know and I will personally go and ask 100 students for the answers to the questions.
Be quite an experiment I would think. Anyone else have suggestions on this?

      Dennis,
I was thinking maybe get 2 questions each from a bunch of us. Try to get people with different areas of expertise or even a good general knowledge to submit then we could vote on the 10 questions.

I'm not a video editor but you were thinking along the same lines as I was, We find someone good at it to edit a "dumb" version and a "smart" version.

Oh! Side by side comparisons, I like that even better. Show people how these kind of videos are rigged! Brilliant!

Here are a couple ideas that popped into my head that could be put to a vote:

        1. Do you agree with the following statement: If it's on the Internet it must be true. Follow up by asking why they think it's true or false. Some of the comments could prove interesting.

        2. What is the capital of Washington DC?

Well, one of the first things that jumped out at me was all the foreign accents.
So, to title the film about "Stupid Americans" is bogus from the start.
Second, I did see a post about the number of samplings used as opposed to the
    number actuallly used.
"Stupid" is not limited to the U.S.A.
In fact, The U.S. is where most of the world's learned people come to for their
    higher education.
I see more doctors with degrees from Ohio State than I do from any other countries
    Universities.
With the exception of Oxford, I challenge any other country to provide better education than M.I.T., Harvard, or Yale.

Yep...While our grade schools may be somewhat lacking, our college system is the envy of the World. Who else is going to educate all those Indian and Chinese engineers if we don't?

And even our grade school system is getting some unfair criticism. Sure, it's gone down some since us older folks were in school, but first generation Asian Americans (meaning English isn't their native language) do very well in our schools. This makes me believe the biggest problem isn't the teachers or the system, but rather the culture at home.

Despite your attempt at saying I'm bitching, factually speaking, I pointed out the GOOD in our system. You, on the other hand, dwell on the negative.

I realize that you don't want "fair and balanced" conversation, as you ALWAYS insist on having the FIRST and LAST word in every one of our discussions...So be it.

The fact is, our higher education is the envy of the World. Why don't you admit it and give credit where it's due?

Why don't you agree that a good part of education starts in the home and that families that place a high priority have kids that are much more succesful academically?

If you notice, I did say that the system has gotten worse since we were in school. However, it isn't all the system. The problem also is a matter of people not placing a higher priority on education. I would say that's a "fair and balanced" opinion.

Because it would indicate if you have ever actually dealt with the educational system since the time you yourself went through it.

I Have, and the quality is no where near as good as it once was. Blame what you want, lack of funds, lack of good teachers, the government intervention with such ridiculous policies such as no kid left behind.,SOL requirements ( Standard Of Learning,if you didn't know).
    Or blame me,I don't care.
As you said, facts are facts and one system is not as good as it once was.

But I think that explains sufficiently why I asked the question.

I had to fight the school system to keep one of my children behind a grade. They wanted to push her through to the next grade even though she couldn't perform any of the basics at the current grade level she was in.
So if that in your mind is blaming the US,so be it.

As far as why the Asian are doing so well, it is because you are correct in that it is because of certain aspects of their culture.

Exactly what I thought was your motivation for asking the question. An attempt at an ad homnem attack/lgical fallacy, trying to discredit my facts and opinions by claiming that because I don't have kids, I'm not qualified to have an opinion.

Two can play this game. Are you the grandson of a Jr. High math teacher? Are you the son of a high school English teacher? I am.

Have you ever seen what a teacher does first hand? Have you ever seen your Grandmother leave home at 6am, get home at 4pm, cook dinner, then grade math homework until 8 pm? I have.

Also, since you have kids and I didn't, this means if we earned the same amount of money, I paid MORE taxes than you. And since tax money is spent on education, and I pay more taxes than you, this alone gives me a right to voice my opinion.

Of course, while true, these are just examples of your "reasoning" and I don't believe this gives my points more validity than your's. However, my points about growing up with teachers and paying more taxes are just as good as your having kids and "fighting" the system.

Now can we return to relevant facts, opinions backed by facts and logical thought?

BTW, here's what a Jr. High school math teacher goes through: In 7th grade, you'll have some students at a 10th-11th grade level others at a 3rd/4th grade level and some at a 7th grade level. Yet, a teacher is expected to teach all of these kids equally, despite the wide range of abilities.

Kurt, you've already shown you are going to try and distort anything I say.More power to you. I never said any of the above that you claim, but I did prove that I spoke from experience. You can,and do,have an opinion on anything you want.

Two can play this game. Are you the grandson of a Jr. High math teacher? Are you the son of a high school English teacher? I am.

Am I the son of a high school English teacher? Why no,I'm not. I'm the son of a man that got 3 separate college degrees while holding down a full time job and feeding a family of nine. One of those degrees was a Master of English degree.another one was a Law Degree ,and he worked for the government for many years as a lawyer for the FTC.

Have you ever seen what a teacher does first hand? Have you ever seen your Grandmother leave home at 6am, get home at 4pm, cook dinner, then grade math homework until 8 pm? I have.

Why yes Kurt,I have. My oldest sister was a teacher. And she did the same as your Grandmother except she was a sister and not a Grandmother.

Also, since you have kids and I didn't, this means if we earned the same amount of money, I paid MORE taxes than you. And since tax money is spent on education, and I pay more taxes than you, this alone gives me a right to voice my opinion.

Actually that statement is not true. But the facts are that you have a right to state any opinion you want. Of course, that's been addressed numerous times already.

Of course, while true, these are just examples of your "reasoning" and I don't believe this gives my points more validity than your's. However, my points about growing up with teachers and paying more taxes are just as good as your having kids and "fighting" the system.

The possibility of you paying more taxes could be true, but it is not a definite. It IS an opinion you are entitled to though. However your points being just as good as mine are again your opinion, and you are welcome to it.
I don't agree, because you literally have no concept what it was like.

Now can we return to relevant facts, opinions backed by facts and logical thought?

All my discussion has been both my opinion and facts.

And your last statement just adds credence to my criticism of the system.
A 7th grade math teacher should be teaching students that are at a 7th grade level.
Again, the "no child left behind" laws and the SOLs made a mockery of our educational system.
Again, I never said anything about higher education except saying I would conduct a poll on a college area.

Honestly, I don't care if you agree or disagree. And I didn't come in here and make it personal.

        Edit:
Apparently you made another post while I was typing this one.
Again, I never said anything about the college system, but then I also addressed that in the above.

The one thing we can agree on is that we DO have one of the best higher educational systems in the world. And I am proud I quit my job in my early 40s,took out my retirement and went back and got my college degree. No one can take that away from me.

        Edit 2:
By the way, anyone reading this I am still looking for possible questions to add. Post here or PM me.

And yes Kim, I agree the system is worse, as I've now stated in 3 or 4 posts on this thread.

However, I still believe the biggest factor is in the home and that a kid can get a good education at any school if they choose to do so.

On the other hand, this only applies to grade school and not higher education. Our college system is still the best in the World. We are still doing something right. Let's give credit where credit is due, and not simply focus on what's wrong.

    Simply not fair. But funny

Fact is, if you do this in Lisbon, Paris or any other european city, *some* people will be dead ignorant... Then you just need to edit out the good ones, and there you go: a video making people stupid.

But one thing is certain: kids don't watch news (why would they with all this drama, and nonsense going on...), don't read newspapers, and they'll be more dumb then 10/20 years ago.

They recently had running of the bulls in Spain, where you can publicly or globally prove you are a total idiot!

Probably get 95% idiot answers there, minus the 5% of psychotics

      Go bulls!

Forgot to add to #34, that Americans shouldn't get too upset about an Aussie comedy show making fun of Americans. As you can see from the videos I included they make more fun of Aussies than anyone else. It's just a comedy show - nothing more, nothing less.

That's true, but the reason l say they are nuts is because they consciously choose to do it!

When a half ton bull is charging for you, it is near impossible to get out of the way, and the bull can toss you away like a ragdoll!

I know because l used to live on a farm, and had that happen to me, unintentionally. Half a ton of bull, is no bull!

Running away from bulls is up there with skyping on trains! Getting on the roof of a train with overhead wires with mains power is nuts!!!

Oh dear...I don't want to get in a heated debate with anyone and I don't want to upset any of my American friends here on the Warrior Forum so all I am going to say is Im pretty sure that this was heavily edited to make it a lot worse than it shows!

Also like Whateverpedia said..Its just a silly comedy show and I know the US makes a lot funnier videos and comedies than this.

It's all just fun and games.

KimW lands a jab! another jab!
    Kurt lands right hook!
KinW jab, jab, straight right to the jaw,
Kurt staggers, comes back with a left uppercut and a
    misses with right!
KimW keeps jabbing keeping Kurt off balance!
Kurt lands a left and a right to KimW's ribs!
    What a bout!
It's Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed going toe-to-toe!

Anyway, the point still stands, "stupid" is a world-wide problem.
It is not limited to the U.S.
In fact, I would say, the makers of the video ain't exactly Einsteins.:p

Wanna see a truly scary movie?

    Watch "Idiocracy".

    "
Private Joe Bauers, the definition of "average American", is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes 500 years in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed-down that he's easily the most intelligent person alive."

It's supposed to a comedy until you realize that that is exactly where we're headed!

I've seen that movie and I have to agree with you,it is where where we are headed.
I know some that found it very funny too,but to me it was in the ranks of dumb and dumber, which I've never thought was funny. But I understand everyone's sense of humour is different.
That being said I agree (I know I already said that) with you as to it hitting too close to home.

I think it was Steve/Seasoned that has mentioned that movie in the past.

    Put yourself in their shoes.

Your walking down the street, deep in thought. Someone unexpectedly stops you,
shoves a camera in your face, and starts asking you off the wall questions.

You're under pressure to answer quickly and you throw out the first answer
that comes to mind, without time to reconsider your first thought.

Those people were a lot more polite than I would have been. I would have
said, " Get the F_ out of my face with that thing."

That being said, I am also of the opinion we're being deliberately dumbed-down. A lot of time is being spent teaching students to be politically correct rather than teaching critical thinking skills.

Not quite sure what that has to do with an Aussie TV show (The Chaser, from which the OP was taken), unless of course the premise of the video is actually correct (he says as he runs away).
