Maria Popova reviews Sam Harris' new book Lying.

(I love Sam Harris' work.)

In Lying (free on Amazon until Sunday, August 5th) neuroscientist Sam Harris explores the nature and conditions of lying -- defined, in most basic terms, as "to intentionally mislead others when they expect honest communication" -- as a complex psychosocial phenomenon, rather than a simplistic categorial imperative.
As indicated in the quote, you can get the Kindle version at no charge through August 5th.

  • Thanks for mentioning this Joe -

If you are not Kindle capable right now, Harris also has a free pdf available on his site as well. (same limited time)

Cool. Perfect. I prefer PDFs over Kindle.

Good find Joe. Also I found Maria Popova's site interesting.

I downloaded the Kindle version, and in my Fire it is a 562 page book.

And thanks to MMM for finding the pdf version. Interestingly the pdf is 58 pages. When I look at a couple pages on Kindle, and a couple on the pdf, they seem to be about the same number of words. It must be an optical illusion.

BTW for anyone who doesn't own a Kindle, Amazon gives away a free kindle reader software for Windows and for MAC. You can read Kindle books on your computer.

I had only seen the pdf version, but I was surprised at it's condensed size - I thought it might be a snippet, (it didn't seem to mention anywhere it might be) but it appears to be a complete book.

I'm surprised at the discrepancy between a 58 and 562 pg. book, as that is quite an astounding difference.

Maybe with both copies something different will become evident?
