Help. FreeFileVewer has corrupted my machine -I think.

Hope this is the right forum for this. If not, could some kind soul please shift it, or advise me. All and any positive suggestions gratefully received. (Apart from going out and buying a new PC.)
My HP Desktop with Windows XP refused to restore to an earlier time and I read that one should go to 'Control Panel', 'Folder Options' and add the word 'EXE' into the box 'File Types', 'New'.
After doing that my Outlet express and Internet Explorer buttons in my 'Start' bar changed from the correct logos, to blue boxes with three horizontal dot thingies in them. In fact, most of my other boxes are doing the same thing and sending me to 'screen capture 1' below, which is making my machine virtually useless, as I now can't open any software, etc.

Clicking them, or indeed, even the 'Help and Support' button gives me only a page of FreeFileVewer's gobbldegook, as per 'screen capture 1' .
The top line

I went back into the Folder Options to delete the 'EXE' previously inserted, but it was not there. So I again went in and added 'EXE' , but this time I did it after going into "Programs' and sending the whole FreeFileVewer folder to my recycale bin. This had the effect of pushing FreeFileVewer down one level , but the progs said they then couldn't find an EXE to open the programmes, so I was still stymied.

I do hope some kind soul can quickly help me with a simple and easy to follow solution, before I go stark staring mad and throw this so-and-so computer through the nearest window, as I've been trying to fix it myself for the past 24 hours and am a bit of a weary, almost 79 year old age pensionioner. FreeFileVewer seems to have made my PC virtually unusable and I need it to work ASAP.

Thank's chaps, quite will ing to give my e-mail address and even my 'phone number if needed.
Shall try and add some screen captures below, for you to feel my angst.

Ray Cunningham.
What the heck! Here is an e=mail address: mikeond (at) gmail (dot) com
P.S. Tried to get screen ca-tures through my Irfanview, as usual, but of course, Irfanview will only open into the gobbledegook page of FreeFileViewer. Dammit!
Below is a tiny part of the Fre File Viewer's page that comes up, but it is actually a long, long page with masses of columns.

    Hi Ray,

I have no idea what happened there, but the only thing I could recommend at this point would be to do a system restore to an earlier date. You mentioned that you could not do that though... so what exactly happens when you try?

Thank you, Brandon. Well, I click 'Start" then the 'Help and Support' button then left click on that. I
m immediately taken to a page of long columns of figures etc.. The heading for that page is "HelpCtr.exe"

Unfortunately, I cannot show any progs, not even notepad or Irfanview, so cannot show even a screen capture.

Just tried to highlight just the first few lines of that long page, but only this shows and it looks nothing like that anyway.

      Thank you again.

      Ray

I haven't used XP in a long time, but if I recall correctly, system restore is accessed from Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.

If you are not able to access it in the normal way (due to your machine being corrupted), then you'll have to boot into safe mode and access it via command line. Here's how to do that...

How To Start Windows XP System Restore From a Command Prompt

Then once you're in system restore... for the restore point, just select what you think was the last good date (I usually select a restore point at least a few days before the problem started, just to be on the safe side).

        Hope that helps!

          Hello Brandon,

I followed your instructions above and delighted to tell you that they worked perfectly. I can now click on anything on my computer and be sent there, instead of other place which was holding me in a death grip, it seemed.

So, my very special thanks to both you and Jody, who, I understand, asked you if you could help with my computer problem.

I also have another little snag on my PC.

When downloading a software program I had recently bought, my PC locked up and on the monitor appeared the blue screen of death. There was a full page of text on it, but it only stayed up for about two seconds and then vanished. Then closed down my computer and gave it a cold reboot.

Screen capture was out of the question so I had to try to use my little digital camera to capture it. Unfortunately it was a bit blurry, but I can make out the words. It took me over an hour and a half to photograph it, in between many closings and rebootings.

As I mentioned in an e-mail to Jody,
I was rather afraid I might have to take my computer along to some computer technician. There's one living next door but every time I ask him a computer question and he looks at my old PC, it seems to cost me $75, which is a lot out of an old-age pension, especially as I have a bunch of feral cats outside to feed, plus my three inside furry, feline friends So I was very grateful for all the help I've been receiving.

So, again, thank you both for taking the trouble to help a stranger out of a nasty and potentially expensive, situation.

          Cheers,

          Ray

Ray, You are welcome - but lets wait until we get you fixed!

There are many reasons for a BSOD (blue screen of death).

Do you know what the message was? You can email it to me if you were able to capture it and I will forward it to Brandon.

I'm thinking the best course of action is to do a repair installation of your operating system. Do you have an XP Operating System disk?

Maybe Brandon can chime in here.

      Hi Ray,

No problem, glad I can help!

I agree with Jody... at this point, it might be best to back up all of your important files and re-install your OS. It's not much fun, but it should only take a couple hours, and your computer should run much better after that.

And for future reference, I would recommend using CCleaner and defragging your hard drive on a regular basis. Those 2 things will go a long ways towards keeping your computer running as smoothly as possible.
