Vermont Restaurants Busted For “French Canadian Tax”
  • So it was Vermont who stole 30 million dollars in Maple syrup from Quebec in retaliation? Aha! Now that presents a sticky border situation...they may not be able to sweet-talk their way out of this...

This has been discussed before. Places in the US do this ALL THE TIME now! Order delivery? Order room service? Order as part of a large group? Order in some "posh" restaurants? You will probably notice that they have added a 15% to 20%+ "tip" ON TOP of any fees for the delivery or service. Someone probably came up with another trigger to trigger the added fees.

They almost have to. Servers are charged sales tax on the price of the food they serve - so if someone doesn't tip, it actually means that the server is paying to wait on you. This isn't the server's fault that the Gov has decided that they have to have some of that money, too. Just think - when they installed that tax, servers only got around 10% on a normal tip - then add payroll taxes and some people ended up taking home paychecks of nothing or just a few bucks. I remember the protest staged in MI when they first started taking taxes on the amount of the server's tabs for the shift and many ended up with zero. Making sure that they get the money from those who won't pay gratuities without them being automatically added is practically survival for a server.

I'm pretty sure she meant income tax. I don't know all the rules, but basically servers have a certain percentage of their sales added to their regular wages as income - whether they actually received it or not. Another public service provided for by your IRS.

Well, when they spoke of that tax earlier, it was brought up as a way to make things FAIRER, so they would be charged income tax on TIPS COMING IN!

Then again, they now tax interest on credit cards, tax premiums on donations, and tax barter.
