What are some reasons a girl would pretend to be a guy?

Well Mulan did it to save her father and save her people from a Hun invasion led by Shan Yu.

Portia did it to save a man from being imprisoned (Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice")

Wow, Wikipedia has a whole list of real historical characters of women impersonating men. Even Mulan was based on someone who may have been an actual historical character. Lots of compelling reasons for it. Truth really is stranger than fiction:

She could be 'transgender' (think she is a male born in a female body) or 'gender confused'.

She could be a lesbian and say she loves women but acts like a man because it is really men she loves so much that she wants to be one. (penis envy)

She could be doing it because she feels too vulnerable as a woman.

Maybe was abused and wants to hide.

Maybe her father wanted a boy -

Lots of possibilities.

I do occasionally see lesbian couples with one partner behaving and dressed like a male and the other very feminine. The feminine one of such a relationship must be borderline heterosexual, attracted to a manly woman, but not to men. Why are there butches? That's just the way they like to be is my wild guess. It doesn't bother me.

I used to "butch down" if I was going to walk anywhere at night. I figured someone would be less likely to hassle a guy out on their own than a female alone at night.

Then I got a BIG BIG doggy and some martial arts training and figure if anyone is stupid enough to mess with us out walking, they were probably in more danger than me - and I quit taking off makeup and tucking hair under a hat. And that's when the rumors stopped...................

  You have mentioned it before here here. I recall it from a post in which I think you were saying something like that in dance schools (something outside of my realm of experience) there is a culture of positivism that clashes with the fact that some people are just plain clumsy and untalented, lol, or something like that if I understood it correctly.

It IS funny! Today, a woman could dress darn close to a man, and not get even the whisper of a rumor. They can play sports, and even go into the military. As far as penis envy, etc... dressing up wouldn't help it. But yeah, I don't understand it either.

I once heard a story, TRUE and on the news, about a girl that pretended to be a younger boy. I don't know if anyone said why. And she was in SCHOOL! Outside of maybe seeing how some younger boys would treat her, and what they thought, what could she hope to accomplish?

Hey guys, in spite of all the cutsie answers to this questions there could be a legit reason for this. You see, she could be an author who has written in a genre that is mostly frequented by males and so she creates a male image and pen name for herself. Very often males are taken more seriously than females. Business people don't try and scam them so much either. So when the movie moguls come knocking on her door hoping to make a movie of her book series, they will offer her a lot more dough for the rights. So long as she doesn't let on she's a female. This could get sticky if she has to be seen in person. But she might decide to make a really mysterious character out of that pen name and trick everyone. In fact, some authors have done this over the years.
