This thread is dedicated to Jim AKA Roaddog...

The waiting is over...Tonight the defending Superbowl champs NY Gnats play the Dallas Cowpies to kick off the 2012 NFL season.

I'm so excited about Peyton Manning and my Broncos, I can't wait for the season to begin! It's be a long time since I was this excited.

Peyton Manning joke: Peyton's forehead is so big, it should be called a fivehead.

Washington Redskins joke:

Q: What do you call Joe Theisman, RG3, Art Monk and John Riggins?

A. The four skins! (say it out loud)

First season in a long time that I'm truly excited about.
We've got the gents in week 2 and the cowpies in week 3.
I hope they beat the hell out of each other tonight

On another thread I predicted the "What the Bucs" and my Broncos to be the most improved teams this year...Let me add the Seahawks to the list too. The Squawks really looked good in preseason and their rookie QB Russel Wilson looks like the real deal.

I'm not sure our record will improve all that much, as we have a killer schedule early, but we will be much harder to beat. IMO, Peyton is fine. It's the other players that will need to adjust to being "perfect".

Thom...BTW, your Bucs picked up a QB from our roster Adam Weber. I really like the kid and think he will have a good NFL career, probably as a solid backup. He really didn't get much of a chance with us, but when he did, he came through.

My good friend is a cowpies fan...He HATES it when I call them the cowpies...I always tease him "How 'bout them Pies!".

He's on our Practice squad at the moment.
We play each other week 13 in Denver.
I've got two friends that are Giants and Jets fans respectively.
You can see the smoke coming out of their ears when I call their teams the Jersey Giants or Jersey Jets
I was impressed with the way we handled the Pats in week 3 of preseason. Our first series we scored 7, on their first series we scored 7
I'm just looking for some good football this year

    My Predictions for the Browns:

Weeden's first pass is a TAINT and it gets worse from there.

Trent Richardson tries to shoulder the load and promptly suffers a season-ending, possibly career-ending, injury.

Josh Cribbs is the team's leading scorer (with the exception of Phil Dawson) and he doesn't play a snap on offense.

As soon as ownership approves the purchase, Haslam fires the entire staff and brings Gerry Faust out of retirement to "lead the team to victory."

    The Browns win three games.

I watch every minute through a beer-soaked haze and only twice burn my tongue on nacho cheese dip.

All-in-all, looks like a pretty good season for the Brownies.

Bonus Prediction: Browns "win" the coveted first pick in the draft, select Matt Barkley, and the entire city burns.

As a Bronco fan, this is hard for me to say, but I'm almost starting to feel sorry for Cleveland fans. Not only has the history of the Browns been painful, the whole Lebron mess just adds salt to the city's wounds.

And good luck to everyone and hope their team stays healthy. And stay tuned later tonight as The Sheriff rides into town on a white Bronco at sunset.

      A fellow Browns fan!

They sure looked good today. That Weeden dude seems to be a franchise QB. Different team, but same old Browns.

Yep. Classic Browns game today. You go in thinking they're going to get smoked. You're all set for a whooping. But then they hang in there. The second you start to believe they might be able to pull it off? They break your heart.

Won our first game at home under new coach.
That should bring some fans in and lift the blackout.
Now a couple tough road games with the gents and cowpies.

Yup. Whats up with that? NFC east beasts 3 weeks in a row!

Plan on going to Raymond James for either ATL or PHI.

          And it wudn't pretty, but it's a W!

We held the Panthers to 10 yards total rushing and Cam had 4 of them in 5 trys
            One blocked and recovered punt.
Ronde got a sack and interception in his 200th start at corner.
But yeah 3 NFC East teams in a row. At least living in NY, I'll get to see next weeks game.
Today was a 300 mile ride up to Lake Champlain, over the new Crown Point bridge then to Middlebury Vt. for A&W.
Next Sunday I won't leave my living room

49ers off to a good start beating the Packers. Akers had a record typing 63 yard field goal, Alex Smith and Frank Gore played really well and ... then there was Vernon Davis failing after a touchdown. haha

          Hey Tim...

Yeah, I saw Vernon getting rejected by the goal post "live". It's kind of funny because I also saw a 36 Y.O. Tony Gonzales jam one over the goal post for the Falcons in KC.

The good news is, to be rejected by the goal post like Davis did, you have to score a TD first.

Yeah, I think the 9ers had the most impressive win on Sun. David "Green" Akers boinking a field goal through from 63 was pretty cool.

I hate Spurrier. Reason is because I live around a ton of South Carolina fans and they are more annoying then Cowboys fans. They call of sports radio all day around hear and know nothing about football and are all bandwagon fans.

When they loose nobody calls when they win everybody loves them. I also hate it because they call SC USC. USC is in California!!

      Of course
Ya know I've still never been to an NFL game
I've got almost all the Bucs hats up to the super bowl, still got a creamcicle jersey too. In fact I still have a wall clock shaped in the outline of a helmet with the 'Buccaneer' head on it. I always thought the knife in his mouth looked like a syringe though:rolleyes:
Did you see the post game interviews with Coach Shiano, Josh Freeman, and Ronde Barber? Ronde was saying this defense reminds him of the old Bucs defense, you know the ones that when you looked at game tape you thought they sped up the camera (his words).
This week will tell a little more, going against the super bowl champs.
I remember when we first hired Shiano reading a story about him. The reporter talked to the other head coaches in his division and asked what they thought about him heading up the Bucs. To a man they said they where glad he was gone because they hated playing his teams because they where so well coached and so damn good.

    Loved the "D".
Glad to see McCoy playing well.
Barron LIT UP Steve Smith(thanks for that ,Mark, that guy has been aggravating me since the Del Homme days)
Still dont get why the OCs' in Tampa think the can ram it up the middle!
    Our o-line aint big enough!
Would like to see more deep shots, too.
Doug Martin is a STUD. hope they dont wear him out....

We still need work on both sides but especially the Offense.
We're heading in the right direction though, finally.

Good luck everyone in your prelim games today. Should be some entertaining games until the NFL officially plays again on Monday night.

    Can RG3 do it again?

Will Thom's Freeman win a game on the road after losing 7 straight?

Can Mark Sanchez repeat his performance or will we see more Tebow?

And will Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz shake hands?

Funny Kurt, I just popped in here to dig out this thread and get it ready for today
Living in NY this is one of the rare occasions I get to see my Bucs play. I've been watching interviews all week from the Bucs and Giants and I've noticed a big difference in the way they're approaching this game. All the giants I've seen are talking about last week and how they have something to prove. All the Bucs players won't talk about last week and stress they play a one game season and this season is the Giants. Win, lose, or draw, I think it will be an exciting game.

I picked your Bucs to upset the Giants today (out of both respect for Schiano and hatred of New York). I hope they don't make me look any dumber than I've made myself look so far.

Here's hoping the Pats don't fall into a trap against the Cardinals; but with Kolb starting I'm not all that worried . Let's keep that balanced offense coming!

Half way through the second quarter and we have 2 interceptions, 2 touch downs and we're up by 11

We will be 1- 3, and in last place in our division.
Defense was tight until the 4th qtr. NYG 510 motherf%@#&*! yards.
Nicks OWNED Talib. Most dominant WR performance of this season (so far)
Play calling was horrendous in the second half.

Yep Nicks was a pain in our ass alright
But I saw us play 60 minutes of hard football, and that is something we haven't seen in a few years.
I still say if we continue on as we did yesterday we have the makings of a damn good football team.
We played the super bowl champs hard and regardless of how many yards Manning throw for, they only beat us by 7.

                        Very True.

                        My concerns are;
Every team now has tape on how to beat Talib.
The OC is still trying to bang it up the middle.
Freeman is still being "reigned in".

Ya know I'm a hard core pewter head, Man.

By the way, regarding the Niners, I am now really appreciating Alex Smith, even though he struggled for years. I was convinced he wasn't the guy and was a bad draft choice. He's looking like a winner, although he may not have the best arm in the league. The guy just rarely makes mistakes now.

Smith has the 49er record for passes without an interception and that is impressive with the 49er qb history. The next QB in line for passes without interception is Bart Starr at 294. I'm not sure if Smith will reach that, but it's interesting to note, Smith didn't throw an interception in the playoffs last year also and the playoffs aren't included in the record. The all time record is held by Tom Brady at 358!

Ouch! Got off to a bad start with 4 turn overs in the first quarter. Good news is, we didn't give up and were in the game until the end.

BTW...Tim, I think the 9ers have been the most impressive team in the first two weeks, with Texas also looking good. We play the Texans next week.

As a Giants fan we constantly hear talking heads say "Eli is no Peyton..."

Today I heard it the other way - "Peyton is no Eli" (assuming because Peyton didn't get the win...).

      I had to chuckle.

Over at ESPNBoston, Pats fans are talking about how much the offense needs Welker to get involved. I don't really agree, but this comment was too awesome to ignore:

They need him like John Madden needs Brett Favre highlights...

Broncos pay the Texans today...I think the Texans are one of the top 5 teams in the NFL and not getting the attention they deserve.

It will be interesting to see how Thom's "What the Bucs" deal with the Cowpies.

I think the Aints will get off the schnide and get their first win against KC and the Sunshine Band.

And Norv is 2-0 for the first time in his coaching career...Where's Jim???

      What am I. chopped liver?

A very mobile Tony Homo and sh***y bucs secondary could make for a long day.
It will be a good game. If Tampas OC keeps banging Doug Martin up the middle, that kid is gonna be spent QUICK.

I am soooo freakin Pissed at Mike Sullivan, (tampas offensive coordinator)
Even Aikman and Buck, total NFC east Homers, were mocking his play calling.
When they FINALLY took the reigns off of Freeman,( 2 minute drill), SURPRISE he drove the ball down the field for a FG.
If Schiano doesn't ring Sullivans bell, if not FIRE him, I'll be shocked.
The most ridiculous move they could make is benching Freeman.
          Bucs Defense was AWESOME today.

That was nothing less then embarrassing (offense).
I agree, I hope Coach kicked Sullivans ass all the way back to the locker room.
With the weapons we have on offense, there was no excuse for the calls he was making.
I thought Freeman was off a little today, but that I think was caused more by Sullivans play calling not letting Josh get warmed up and really in the game.
Yep Defense looked more like the old Bucs D today

Yeah...don't get your hopes up. About a 1.7% chance according to this site: National Football League Playoff Chances - Sports Club Stats

And if the Saints keep playing like they have they'll knock themselves out of the race fairly quickly.

I didn't realize that the 49ers became the 1st team to ever have over 300 yards rushing and passing in the same game! This offense is definitely improved and the defense is back after a bad game against Minnesota. Next game against the Giants should be interesting.

Right now, one thing the G-Men have going for them is they tend to do well on the road. Their defense is not playing up to its potential yet though... 2 games without a sack so far this year. Secondary not real healthy either.

OTOH, the Niners look REAL good so far this year.

                    Should be a good game.

RG3 really looks great so far...He's Michael Vick with accuracy and a brain.

My two top rated teams, Texans and 49ers, both lost...I'm not sure who the best team is right now. It's still probably between those two teams and the Giants. I'm not completely sold on ALT just yet.

I'm still sticking with Denver, the What the Bucs and Seatle to be this year's most improved teams by the end of the season, although ARZ fans will probably argue with me at this point in time.

...And, Peyton Manning is as hot as he's ever been in his career. He's only the second player in history to pass for more than 330 yards in three straight games without an INT. He's also on pace to pass for more yards in a season than in any other season. Now if the rest of the team can halfway play up to Peyton's level.

      Hey John,

No one's heard from him since Feb.

He was always active in the football threads. If he was around, I think he would have been here for this game tonight, my Denver Broncos against his San Diego Chargers.

I wish if he was OK that he'd just give us a post telling us that everything is fine and he just needed to move on. Hopefully he's OK and he just got tired of us.

AT this point in time, I like the Bears and the Texans, who happen to play later tonight. My preseason was 9ers and Texans. But having watched Cutler and Brandon Marshall together in Denver, I'm not surprised by what they've done this year.

And come on Thom and Rob...let's get the Muscle Hamster rolling again. I need your What The Bucs to beat Jim's Dischargers. Remember, you drafted Doug Martin with a pick we traded you, so it's the least you can do.

Damn. The Niners have looked so great in some games this year, for example this one tonight against the Bears, but they have had a couple bad games in between where they didn't look even close to being Champions.

Kaepernick might be a better fit for the 9ers than Smith and Alex has been having a great year!

I liked Kap when he was at Nevada. He's a fast Tebow. Gruden was comparing him to another QB that went to school in Nevada, Randall Cunningham (UNLV). Kap is REALLY a long strider. When he gets it going, he's fast.

And a tie against the Rams?

So the Niners started Kaepernick instead of Alex Smith. There's the old saying in the NFL "you don't lose your starting job by injury". Or something like that anyways. It does happen occasionally though, but not usually when a quarterback is ranked third in the league like Smith was. The thing is, Kaepernick has something that Smith doesn't: a very strong and accurate arm that connects on deep throws. Plus, he's a better runner and scrambler although Smith is good also. In everything else they are comparable. I think it was the right decision by Coach Harbough, although I feel a bit bad for Smith. He's been through a lot with the Niners and the last two years has really played well. Tough situation for him.

You do realize the Broncos are #4 in team defense and the What the Bucs are #30?

Be sure to tell Freeman to DUCK! The Broncos lead the NFL in sacks.

I'm picking the Broncos because I don't think you can start two rookies in the defensive backfield against Peyton and come out ahead too many times.

More specifically, it was our pressure. We lead the NFL in sacks and while we only had 1 sack today, we were putting pressure on Freeman all game, including the pick 6. On the other hand, don't think Manning was touched all game.

IMO, the game wasn't as close as the final score may indicate. Once we got up, we called off the pressure.

BTW, people over-look our D. We are the only team in the NFL that has both a top 5 O and a top 5 D. Plus, IMO our special teams are top 5. I think you saw what Trindon Holiday can do, and he's probably the fastest player in the NFL.

They knew we are known for come from behind wins in the 4th
Also did you notice our D never showed Manning what they where doing, just lining up the same for every play.
Manning ended up with the same passing yards as Freeman and only 1 TD more then Freeman. We gave him the short stuff.
Again the difference was your D playing a little better and the pick 6.
              We didn't overlook your D

Our D didn't keep up the pressure the whole game. We have a Thursday night game this week and we pulled a few starters, including Champ Bailey, out of the game for the last scroing drive the Bucs had, to save them a bit for the short week. If we really wanted to pressure the Bucs, Champ and the others would have been in the game.

We are the BEST 4th quarter team in the NFL, and the scoring stats will back me up on this.

BTW, the next time the Bucs touch Peyton Manning will be the first time they touch him.

We took out some of our starters, as well as played prevent for your last scoring drive, as Fox does. Just stating facts. Personally, I prefer real victories, but if you need a "moral victory" to feel better, go for it.

                      So. The Bucs...

After a pathetic showing last week against PHI and
an absolute beatdown from Drew Brees and the leagues WORST defense...

Coach Schiano should FIRE Offensive Coordinator Sullivan. FIRE Defensive backs Coach Cooper, FIRE Offensive Line Coach Bostad, and FIRE Wide Recievers Coach Fleck. Defensive Coordinator Sheridan should be put on notice as well, one more embarrassing game and you are DONE as well.

Believe me, I am not a fair weather fan, and I understand this is still a young team.
And up until the loss to Philly, every team that beat them is a playoff contender.
The FRUSTRATING thing is the poor coaching.

    An NFL thread too? Nice!

The Niners got a HUGE win against the Pats but I couldn't watch that 3rd quarter when Brady was shredding their D. Niners punched them in the mouth in the first half which was great to see! I'm glad the big Seattle game this weekend won't mean as much but still think the Niners will win that one too.

Really want the two seed though with the Packers coming on strong. Would rather not go to Lambeau field in the second round.

Does anyone think the Superbowl will have a team OTHER than:

    NFC
    GB
    SF
    ALT

    AFC

    Texas

I just don't see a team other than these making a run.

That's a tough call. As you know, the past few seasons had some unlikely - barely over 500 - teams make a run and even win. But as it stands right now? I think you pretty much nailed it.

I never said beating the Browns is "badassery". For Bronco fans, beating up the Browns is pretty common place. After all, we've whipped the Brownies something like 22 out of 26 games, so bullying the Browns isn't anything special. So we agree on that point.

What I did, in case you haven't been paying attention, is post the same video (which was a joke between Roaddog and me) after each of the Broncos 10 straight wins.

If you had just a bit of sportsmanship, you might have offered a "congratulations", but it seems that was above you.

Seattle is a team that could make some noise in the playoffs. Maybe Chicago, if they get hot. But I really don't think either are in the class of ALT, SF or GB. But you never know...

Kurt, I think you misunderstood my statement. I was deriding the Browns as being inept. The "you" I referenced was the collective "you." I can, however, see how it could have been interpreted in a different fashion. I think, with several "Browns stink" references from me in this thread, you can give me the benefit of the doubt that I wasn't trying to attack the Broncos.

They're looking really good. I had Denver, The Bucs and Seahawks as my 3 most improved teams at the start of the season. The Broncos and Seahawks picks look pretty good right now. And the Bucs did improve a bit.

Saw this in NFL.com earlier tonight. To get the wild card, the Giants have to win, and the Cowboys, Vikings, and Bears all have to lose.

It's possible any one of those teams could lose, but probably not all three. Even if they did, can the Giants win? I haven't seen them play during this epic swoon they're going through. What happened to them?

Again, I'm a Kap fan. As a long time Nevada resident, I was aware of him at Nevada. I thought then he was a faster version of Tim Tebow, with a much better arm.

And when he gets that long stride going, ain't no one going to catch him.

Plus, he really seems to be a great kid.

Should be a good game. I think Kaep will give Atlanta's defense problems and I'm sure the coaching looked at the Seattle game to picks some plays for him to excel. I hope the Crabtree thing doesn't affect the team. :/

49ers/Texans were my preseason picks for the Superbowl, so I'll stick with the 49ers in this game. I'm not sure how an older Ravens team will do coming off a double overtime, so I'll pick NE.

And...I'd love to see a foot race between Kap and a healthy RG3.

Congrats to Tim and all the other 49er fans. Nice comeback.

If Baltimore wins, we'll have the HarBowl with Jim and John.

Yes, awesome game for the Niners. What a comeback! Time to get ready for the SuperBowl! Two weeks of nothing but "Har-bro" talk and Ray Lewis.

Congrats to Ravens fans. Sorry for the loss Tim and Christophe, your team gave it a helluva try.

    Can't wait 'til next year!

And Tim, it's time to turn our full attention to the Nuggets and Warriors!

The Niners just didn't seem ready in the 1st half and also at the start of the second. If it wasn't for the blackout it might have been a blownout. I'm not sure why they weren't ready: inexperience or over confidence. I'm leaning towards inexperience though. Good comeback though. I'm looking forward to next year. The team is only going to get better, baring injuries.

      Bring on the Nuggets!!
