I keep a copy of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The classics are always a great read.

Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien is my favorite book of all time. it has everything. the story telling was excellent and also the mythic quality was out of the world.

Are davidchatman and Tempest07 pennames for the same person? These two names are both 0 posts and have a similar writing style. Move over, Sherlock Holmes lol, sheesh.

I guess it's a tossup between "War and Peace" and "Horton Hears a Who."

The greatest hard science fiction ever written in my opinion, "Gateway" by "Frederick Pohl". On a future Earth most people live a miserable life so their only hope is to play the lottery. This guy wins and spends the money on a one-way ticket to an asteroid with 400+ star ships that were abandoned there millions of years ago. He along with other "prospectors" gets into these ships and pushes the go button having no idea where the ship will go. Prospectors may find alien artifacts worth a fortune in far off solar systems but most trips result in nothing and many in death. Some never return at all. If you're a hard science fiction fan, I can't recommend this one enough! By the way, it was such a success that a series of 6 or 7 more books followed this one! |

There was a wso I bought here a while back, can't remember what it was but it was one of the best fairytales I have ever read. Other than that a book I read at school, can't remember the name but the title began with the letter S, something like Sunburst or something. Anyway it was about some school mates or small group of freinds that built a time machine or spaceship or something, I'm pretty sure they were going to be going to outer space I seem to remember. I loved that book but when I was nearing the end I had a feeling something wasn't right as I couldn't see how the book was going to finish as the pages were getting less and less but therer was so much left to happen and I didn't want to spoil the surprise by peeking at the last page. It turns out that the book was the first of what must have been a triology and continued in the second book but I never did find that second book, and for me it was one of the best I read as a child. |

I can't possibly narrow it down to one book, but everyone I suggested this book to absolutely loved it: (Disregard the horrible 80's book cover) |

Anna Karenina. After watching the movie. The Brits certainly know how to do a costume drama. |

I think "Dubliners" by the Irish James Joyce. Really great book.

For me a toss up between Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle and Robert Heinlein's Stranger In A Strange Land.

I have a lot of favorite series and authors, but for the time being I would say Dune by Frank Herbert.

I was going to say Pride and Prejudice but I still have a dog eared copy of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. So I'll just stick with both. |
