Do you think better when you are walking?

Or is it just me?
I always suspected it but now I KNOW!

I had to write a piece of code in college the other day in about an hour and forty five minutes and I couldn't. But, just a few minutes back I wrote the same piece of code (from scratch) with the required output in less than 45 minutes.

The only substantial difference was that I could walk in my room while I was thinking.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

Sumit.

Sounds like you could be a Kinesthetic learner, Sumit, like me and my son are.

Here are a few of their characteristics.

    • Learns through moving, doing, and touching
    • Learns best through a hands-on method, actively exploring the world around them
    • Often adventurous
    • Often doodles while listening, thus processing information
    • Speaks with their hands and with gestures
    • Is uncomfortable in classrooms where they lack opportunities for hands-on experience

Yep. It's the case after almost any kind of physical exertion, for me. My exercise of choice, besides a little rompy-pompy, is cycling. When I sit about for an extended period it's like my blood gets stale and my brain starts festering.

Actually, I play guitar and think far better after a little (very little! ) tipple, too, though that's probably just because it eases my anxiety, which obviously can be quite prohibitive to general functioning at times.

I know of a physics student who struggled for months on a difficult problem and only saw the light after his concerned girlfriend dragged him against his will to a square-dancing party, where he came upon the solution while square dancing.

It sounded very encouraging...then I had to read that twice...I thought he had come up with a solution TO square-dancing!
...like the polka and the accordion, it's a riddle which has befuddled man for ages!

Yeah, I think better when I'm not thinking, too.

    Sometimes.

    Maybe not.

I don't know, what do you think?

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

Walking or moving around or to somewhere else besides the place where you have thoughts stagnating. I would have to agree that just sitting for long periods of time is bad for you and creativity. Physically moving yourself around is like lighting a fire under your brain.

We all learn in different ways, so don't be afraid to move until you get your brain back in gear. And, if you are getting hungry, just getting something to eat and drink can also make a big difference in functioning.

I think walking is the best.

I walk my dog every single day man.

      Its like a meditation.

      Everything just stretches kind of.

Next time your angry, go for a walk and see how you feel after 20 minutes, bet you wont be so angry.

In fact walking is such a good way to get your mind off any topic to the point where you can relax and nine times out of ten you will find a solution after a good walk.

I think better while asleep. I did most of my graduate level assignments in my sleep. Think about the problems before bed, write down the answers when I wake up.

Yes, I feel compelled to go for a walk when I have a big decision to make or some frustration that needs worked off. It helps.

In addition, Google "cross crawl brain gym". You will find that these kind of exercises increase blood flow to the brain and "switch the brain on".

Cross crawling and Cooks Hook-ups are great for kids that need to focus, do homework, people who are foggy thinkers, When you are tired, but need to continue on the computer, etc.

How do you not think? I've tried that before. When I'm thinking about nothing, I'm still thinking about how I am thinking about nothing.

I envy you! You must have some kind of super power. When I wake up from sleep, I'd have surely forgotten about the assignment.
