I've been through both scenarios before, and my actions were:
    1. F - let the pet stay for a few hrs and wait to see if it's owner comes looking; then, take the pet to the local shelter.
    2. F - Search around the neighborhood while contacting animal control and the shelter.

    1. F - I would bring the animal to the shelter right away (but you have to know that animals don't get killed there in my country...not at all). I'd stay in touch with the shelter to find out if somebody comes to pick it up. I'd try to talk to people in the neighborhood and put up signs and post on Facebook and local sites. If the animal doesn't get picked up I'd try to find a home for it... or even adopt it myself if possible and compatible with my cat.
    2. F - a combination out of at least A. through C ...craigslist does not play much of a role in my country but I'd use other local web properties and Facebook to put up ads. Of course I'd certainly search around my neighborhood.

I think you forgot facebook in your questions...

I would contact the local shelter advising them I have found the animal, post flyers, check with neighbors and keep the animal in my home until the owner is found. If the owner is not found....keep the animal as long as my other animals got along with it or find it a good home.

    2. F

EVERTHING POSSIBLE....call shelters, vets, flyers, craigslist, neighbours.....you name it, I'd do it.

    1. F. Keep for a few hours, put up signs in the area, publicise on facebook then take to the shelter. I have 4 dogs of my own so not easy to keep big dogs for very long here, there's not enough room.

    2. F. Doorknock the streets, contact local vets with details, contact animal shelter daily, flyers in letterboxes, publicise on facebook.
