    Base humour. Usually it was called "playing blue",and generally the consensus was that good comediennes could entertain without resorting to it,and I agree
    Laurel and Hardy were an excellent example.

    Two of my favorites were borderline though, WC Fields and Mar West, While not really blue, Mae West was the queen of the sexual innuendo for her time.
    And before Fields became the comedic genius that he was,he was a circus and Vaudeville performer. I've always loved his juggling

    This is an entirely different generation though.
