The California Governor is going to OK autonomous cars.

Calif. governor to sign bill to OK driverless cars - SFGate

I've read several articles and, for the most part, the people replying are against it. So my question to you...

How would you market this? To a specific demographic? How would you deal with peoples safety concerns?

I think its fantastic. Although I too have safety concerns I read somewhere a self driven car has traveled over 3000 miles without incident. This is an amazing technological step forward IMO.

I think it's pretty cool but the liability questions sourrounding this are huge.

Who's to blame if there's an incident? Manufacturers? Who will be responsible? What about computer malfunctions?

Safety and insurance considerations are the biggest issues I think.

Great news. Hopefully my kids will live in a day when they can focus on texting while in the car and less on that pesky driving business

Volkswagon has a driverless car that in one year only had one crash.

And it was when one of the staff switched the system off and parked it himself.

That is not made up by the way.

I think this is the first step of a major breakthrough.

If/when they get the auto-autos to coordinate with other cars and traffic signals, this could greatly reduce traffic problems and many of the related issues.

One example is on the highway. When cars can "draft" each other, the mileage improves tremendously.

I think the marketing will be similar to matches and electricity. Matches were called "devil sticks" for quite a while before people accepted them. The same with electricity. It took some time before people felt electrical lights were safer than gas lights.

But eventually, the stats, facts, benefits and convenience will win people over. It may take a generation, but it will happen.

I'll be more impressed when you can send one of those cars to the store and have it shop for you, then bring it back home and put the stuff away.

That raises an interesting question - if you were to let your car drive you to the store to get beer...could you still get a DUI if the car is driving, and makes a mistake?
(how about if the guy was in the passenger seat?)

  • I am apprehensive about it, but if Google can get their car to easily navigate the freeway exchange that is about 1/2 mile down the road from them where 85 meets 101 in rush hour, no hands, all lanes - I may get some real faith in the system...

I share Kurt's optimism for the idea over the long term; but will take a wait and see approach. Are any of us really complaining that they're testing it on California? :p

Autonomous cars are going to be just1 piece of the overall computerized transportation system. It will get to the point that you will not be allowed to drive in certain situations.

I imagine that most cities will wind up with a computerized network. You will get in your car and tell it where you want to go.

You - "Let's go to work."
Car - "You do not have enough gas to get to work. Do you want to stop at Quick-Trip for fuel?"
      You -"Yes."

After work you get into the car. "Let's go home. Stop by the day-care."

      And off you go.

The cities transportation network will know where your car is and where it's going.

Based on driving history the network will know how good the brakes are, how well the car handles, how fast it can accelerate, etc.

Other things being equal gas mileage will increase, more cars will be able to occupy the same amount of space, safety will skyrocket.

George Jetson is closer than you think.

I don't know which is scarier, that you know what that is like or that I do (not with your wife of course).

Yep...And as an ex cab driver, auto autos could replace cab drivers as well.

Half of the cost of a cab ride goes to the driver. Then deduct the high cost of insurance from the remaining expenses and a cab ride could cost 30-40% of what it does today.

You could schedule a ride down to the minute the car appears at your door step.

Also, with the reduced costs of a taxi many people may save on the expenses of owning a car. Most people only use a car an hour or two a day, so it would probably be cost effective to not own a car for many people and "share" the cost of ownership with others.

On a serious note, think about the positive impact no more DUIs/DWIs would have on society from both a legal, medical and personal point of view?

There are more benefits, too, such as less time spent in traffic jams. Cities won't need to spend as much money on roads and bridges due to much better traffic flow on existing roads.

Air pollution would be greatly decreased. Fuel efficiency will be greatly increased.

Accidents will be all but eliminated so insurance costs will go down, with fewer people killed and injured.

Parking spaces can be reduced, freeing up land for other purposes.

We may even become more productive or our lives becoming more enjoyable, spending the time we used to spend driving to work on other things.

        ThomM,

I know what you mean, my friend..... I've had lots of AWESOME times flying down the road......

What is SCARY is.... if the airbag deployed..... We would both be SERIOUSLY injured... She would have a broken neck and I.... Well, I'll leave that to your imagination....

@ Kurt - If I recall, correctly, didn't the article say that a licensed driver would be required to sit behind the wheel?

So, when the car makes a wrong turn, gets in the wrong lane, doesn't honk when someone cuts it off, honks when obviously there was plenty of room for a lane change, or drives with too little gas, who will my wife yell at, me, the car, both? What will be the new protocol?

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

All of those reasons to be yelled at will be eliminated. Your wife will just yell at you for everything else.

No no no no no! I have to say I HATE this. You know what will happen? Pretty soon it will be illegal to drive a car that isn't driven by itself. Safety statistics will say "Self-driving vehicles are 1000 times less likely to be involved in any type of accident." Paper headlines will be "The state says you are too human to drive."

    Goodbye road trips.

    Goodbye Timmies runs.

    Hello future.

Have these people not seen Terminator or iRobot? LOL these robots are not your friend..

But on a serious note, I've NEVER had an accident in my 11+ years behind the wheel.

However I was taught defensive driving, not just HOW to drive.. Theres a big difference.

You could leave your house every single day and get into not one, not two, but 7 different accidents - NONE of which would be your fault.

I think those were the exact statistics from some show on NBC I saw when I was a teen, and I'm sure those numbers have gone up since then.

What are driving schools teaching people these days? Or is it just that automatics are still too hard to comprehend..?

Kids today.. running around with their little automatic transmissions.. HA! Half of them probably don't even know what a stick is..

Oh well. If someone needs an autonomous car for them to feel safe & NOT cause a wreck, so be it, but those stupid little cars better not run me off the road or be the cause of an accident.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I'll be getting PAID if that ever happened to me! haha!!
