I'm trying to get my ms document to save as HTML for Kindle.

Okay - I have an ebook with directions that say to save it as HTML then upload it to NVU.

I don't see any "save as HTML" option when I try to do this.

So how do I do it?

Manually add .html to the end of any text file, in any text editor.

Next, double click the new html file & it should open in your browser as a web page.

This will not overwrite your plain text file, you'll end up with two files (.txt & .html), assumes you started with a .txt file.

Actually, it WON'T! Will it open in a browser? SURE! Almost ANY document will! Open up an RTF file, and it may look like word if you have it setup right. Is it HTML, or formatted as html? CERTAINLY NOT!!!!!!!

      heysal,

Worse comes to worse, you can download open office for free, and save as html with IT! It's not perfect, but looks reasonably close and clean, and you can use Kompozer or some such to clean it up.

        WRONG!

I never said is was formatted as html.

OP. asked how to save as a .html, not how to format html.

OP, also mentioned she would be working with the NVU html editor.

        Try reading.

It's saved as a doc file - does that make a difference? Also - what is a text editor? Is NVU a text editor? Sorry - I'm a writer not a tech.

Basically anything you make a document in is a text editor. If it is saved as a doc then you made it in word?

Thanks Everyone - Travelinguy - that worked.

Now I just have to figure out why I have to use NVU before I put it on that mobi thingamabober. This is a lot more complicated than I thought it would be, LOL

If you know about putting stuff on kindle though, can you tell me if I can put that right on mobi or if I have to save it on NVU first?

Download Kindle Previewer if you haven't already. It's great. Also get Kindle for your PC. Once I've got my book done with the previewer. I copy and paste it into the "My Kindle Content" folder and that makes it available for your PC Kindle. I find this the easiest way to work. I'm going through all mine right now making fine adjustments.

All you do is create your book in Word, save as Web Page. Then open the previewer, Click "File," and Open Book. Point it to the saved Web page ed. and it will render it inside of 20 seconds. Then pop that pup into your Kindle Content folder and it will immediately be available to view on your PC Kindle.

First, I am not being a smartass.
But honestly, for what you get with some WSOs lately, you probably could of added some filler and sold this information as a $17 WSO.
That is the most concise method I have seen for getting started in kindle publishing.

Thanks, Kim. Yeah, I bought Kindling as a WSO. It's got lots of great marketing and promo stuff in it. It also has a section on putting your book together.

I leaned this by the hunt and peck method. I uploaded four books to Amazon without knowing what they looked like. It turned out they were okay but now I know how to get them perfect. I'm sure not a perfectionist but there are plenty of readers that are and they will rip you in their Reviews for even the littlest things, well, some will.

Wow - I downloaded Mobi and NVU for nothing?

Okay - I saw not to do a TOC in MS so it's not on there - can I put that on via Kindle or do I have to do it elsewhere - also what about the cover?

I know this is a lot of questions but once I get it done, I won't have to go through all the explanations again. I've read three ebooks now and none of them are the same and this is really being more difficult that I expected because of conflicts of info.

They also say I need a huge pic for a cover and that it is added separate. Sigh.

I don't know what type of file Mobi takes. If it's the same as a Kindle file you should be okay, but I don't know. None of my books have TOCs so I can't help you there either. As for the cover, you upload it separately so don't sweat that. It's a completely different file.

But here's a tip. People will argue about it but this is straight from Amazon. The long side of your cover should be a minimum of 2500 px. That's a big honkin file. But do it anyway because it really improves resolution when Amazon shrinks it down to the size of a postage stamp.

Okay - I can handle that for the cover. I'm going to forego the TOC I guess. I have no clue how to build it with all the links and what pages things are going to be on, so screw it. People can scan for anything specific they want. It's not like I'm charging a fortune for it. My cash cow ebook won't have one.

I appreciate all the help with this. Thanks - especially to you, Travelinguy. Tomorrow I get to down load all of kindles stuff and sign up for it and then I can finish this damned thing off. I like creating the book - but this technical stuff at the end really sucks. Serious.

I just made a TOC using Word for the first time, and it's not too bad. A few steps involved but it's more tedious than confusing. You don't have to worry about page numbers because that will change depending on the text size on the particular Kindle. So you would take the page numbers off anyway. But it's an easy way to make a TOC without manually typing in all the chapter headings yourself. If you don't have many, though, it's probably not a big deal.

If you decide you do want a TOC, let me know and I can help you out.

I agree the technical stuff isn't fun. But once you get set up it's not bad. You might check out Diana Heuser (sp?). She does this along with proofreading (a la carte). It might be worth it as her prices are really reasonable. The only reason I'm doing mine is I want to know how it's done for future reference.

BTW It HAS been a while, but I don't know if things changed much. I tried looking for a free WYSIWYG flexible editor. At the time, I found the only one I could settle with was KompoZer - Easy web authoring It is a patched fork of NVU which apparently is STILL dead. It seems Kompozer is still one of the best free ones.

Apache OpenOffice - The Free and Open Productivity Suite is one of the best free office packages.

WOW! You DON'T need a roomie like THAT! Frankly, that is another reason to LEAVE! BTW the FTC said yesterday that Rent to own computer places can spy on their customers even down to keyloggers!

      FTC Halts Computer Spying

An article says they aren't fining, and that they are OK with it if there is permission.

Anyway, you can, for windows, try going into the control panel(start control(on all windows versions, as I recall.)), and then go to user accounts, You should also look at the display settings, and the screen saver. There is also often a hidden guest account. You'll find it in users. Disable it, or password protect it.

Of course, doing this means YOU will have to log in now. And he may STILL try to do something.

I DON'T claim to be a windows expert. I know the backend ways to protect linux, but the GUI can be different.

I wish I'd known that before I edited. I had it on OO and one of the pdf's I read about it said it needed to be on MS - so I transfered it to MS and finished the editing. If I'd known I could use OO, I would have -- but then I think I would have had to use another step again.

I'm freaking confused - but it's getting done. Right now I'm dealing with thinking again about putting chapter headings. I'm reading the formatting pdf from Amazon themselves - and they are the ones who say to use the "Home" button to set the chapter headings. I'm still trying to find a toolbar with "home" on it. WTF? Guess I'll be talking to Laura pretty soon.

BTW - computer is spyware free again - and password protected. Roomie is pissed but can't say anything or I'd know he tried to get on here again. LMAO.

Damned - I can't believe how much harder it is to format and publish a book than it is to write one.

I believe OO is practically 100% compatible with MS. Simply load the M/S file into OO! BTW THIS is one of the reasons I hate so many tutorials of this nature. They use a tool, which may cost THOUSANDS of dollars, and speak like you NEED it when there s a FAR easier and cheaper way. MS Word IS popular. But on a scale of 1 to 3, against its too biggest FREE competitors, it may rank THIRD!

BTW I say practically because a few odd features may be missing, and the format may be slightly different. It has been a long time since I compared them, like that. They ALL slightly change things on conversion. So your html likely won't look just like the editors file.

It is ironic, but when I first started seeing the trend towards windows, I asked people WHY! Years later, I asked the same question. Their answer? EASIER!

Well, M/S has ACKNOWLEDGED that THAT is why they do it, and why they like icons!

The newest versions of word VIOLATE EVERY standard they built windows on! SURE, they are gui, and use the interface, but WHERE are the drop down menus? NOWHERE!!!!!!!! OK, they STILL have the files menu, HIDDEN behind that stupid logo, but NOTHING else! NOW, they have apparently gotten rid of some, and others are isolated on tabs by THEIR idea of category. So old users have to relearn the interface! Open Office still has the same old interface, so you DON'T have to relearn! They did this with things as simple as the ODBC and task managers as well.

As many of you may know, my mother developed alzheimers. Well, this made the changing of icons especially difficult so even a change like THAT was bad. She would look for the printer icon she knew, and totally miss the current one. She would have to relearn even things ingrained as habit.

HECK, when they started putting icons on printers, I felt, and still feel, that is IDIOTIC! They may replace a word like power or even ON with some icon that is SO small and poorly done that nobody could make sense of it. They may even make ANOTHER button red, and hide the power button or something. of course, that is just ONE example. Wasn't it bad enough when they replaced the OBVIOUS PARALLEL printer connection with a connector that had been, for DECADES used only for serial?

OH WELL, heysal, I ran into your SAME problem! This SHOULD work for M/S WORD 2007-2012.....

I have word 2000 - my problem is I'm not seeming to be able to make headers -- when I try to make them in TOC it tells me I have no TOC items - but how do you make TOC items if it won't let you?

I am thinking if I can figure out how to make headers, I'm just going to put it up in preview and see what it's doing then go from there - it was my understanding that Kindle will show headers on the side just like MS does- so going to try that first. It seems that there's a step missing from making the toc that nobody puts in their directions and I think it's making headers in the first place.

You can do it with Word 2000. Try this. Make a headline and then bold it and change the font size to 14 or 16 pt. Word might recognize it as a header.

I guess I'm just going to save this as a website and go see what Kindle shows it like. If they have something like the sidebar on MS, then I'm wasting my time with all this.

Sorry, I just kind of subconsciously neglected the headings. But that video illustrates my complaint. It is near worthless for 2007. In 2007, you have to click the home tab, go to the style area, and scroll horizontally to what you want.

it was obviously changed between 2003 and 2007, and you are using 2000. On YOURS, it is the style, which is near the font type. There is like normal, textbody, paragraph, heading 1, heading 2, heading 3. heading 1 is the farthest left heading, heading 2 is subordinate and to your right, and heading 3 is subordinate to the other two and to your right. As I recall, it is often on your right center of the screen on the bottom of the area, and a drop down box.

I apologize for being vague, but I have 2007 because a friend gave it to me as a birthday present. I have 2010 because I installed it by mistake. I have OO. Otherwise, I only have my memory of what was.

    Steve
