*Note: This story may be upsetting to some. The officers explanation is very hard to believe at best, and very insulting at worst. (imo)

Many responders have a point - a K9 is a police officer, and if he was killed by a citizen they would be charged with a felony. A least a charge of negligence certainly seems in order.

How do you feel it should be treated?

This officer needs to be charged with animal abuse at the very least. He should actually have his badge taken from him. Here in the States it seems that having a badge is a license to commit any low life, degenerate crime you feel like. Sick of the degeneration of our police force into a mob of licensed thugs and barbarians.

  • The officer did resign - but that may have been a deal to avoid any charges.

    What a tragic story.

"The dog must have let himself into the car while I was away"......are you kidding me??????

That poor dog.....my heart breaks thinking about what his final days were like.

I hope the public pressure results in felony charges and the handler spends many years locked in a cell.

I also hope the police department is held accountable for trying to brush this under the rug.

    wow

    Poor lil thing.

Resigned or not, this guy needs to be indicted. If a civilian killed a police dog, they would be charged with the same crime as if they'd killed an actual police officer.

There is simply no reason why this (ex)cop shouldn't be charged.

There should be charges, and I agree that the story is inconsistent. "She must have let herself into the car"? The story seems to state that the car was on his property before he went on his trip. That means the dog was on his property. How'd he go on a three day trip and just leave the dog to fend for itself?

Jeeze, if you're going to lie at least make it a good one .

Edited to add: This quote is what led me to the conclusion that the incident occurred at his home...

This is ludicrous, first off if it was a daily, average citizen, he or she would have been prosecuted to the fullest extinct the law allows for such a crime. So how did he or she get off without being charged with anything. Oh yeah! I forgot a (law officer) they can get away with crimes from time to time...how sad. But really come on now the system is so,so,so messed up. Why the system didn't do him like they did Micheal Vick!
    Thank You

He should be charged! What did he expect to happen to the dog? Typical though. An officer can gun down another human being and just get suspended from work for two weeks and never charged for murder if it was. Twisted justice system we have.

Very unfair, the officer should face the consequence of his actions, whatever his reason is for leaving the K9 in the car. This is a very obvious example of negligence.
