Just came across this tool that ranks you with other people who can type. So how fast can you type and are you better than my 68% ? I know that's low but whats yours. Measured per minute and gives you a rank.
You may check it Typing Test

Better than 80% - but it has taking my 25 years of practice to get there.

        85 WPM

...which means I've slowed down as my high score years ago was 102 WPM

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.

Took it ten times to try get an average instead of just one outlier number. The results:

    74, 81, 65, 70, 73, 76, 70, 68, 74, 68.

    High: 81

    Low: 65

    Average: 71.9

Makes me high 80s, maybe the bottom of 90 percent.

66.19% -- that's actually better than I thought I'd do. Typing has never been my strong suit and I transpose a heck of a lot of letters. I had 7 mistakes. I will give myself credit that I'm on my first cup of coffee - but if I have to admit it, it doesn't get much better after that. I expected under 50% though, so wasn't disappointed with the score.

I get oohs and ahs from people when they see me typing rapidly. I guess I don't look like the kind of person who types. People more likely think I work a job like a bouncer or in a warehouse.

Naaaah - What are you, a man or a manuscript! Work as a bouncer or a warehouseman - get carpal tunnel the 'old fashioned' way! :p

Speaking of "the old fashioned way" and typing, I saw this the other day on redditt - pretty sneaky way to get an interview

I sent Tom Hanks a 1934 Smith Corona typewriter with a typed invitation to come on my podcast. This was his response.

I don't think it would be very easy to retrain myself after all these years. Old habits die hard and all that...

I used to be very fast, in the 90-100 range, now likely only 80's. I can't take the test now because I'd have to cut my nails. Seriously, not a joke, long fingernails and speed don't mix well on a computer keyboard. I keep promising myself to start learning Dragon instead of a manicure and haven't done it yet.

Yes indeed ... exactly so. Typing from your head is totally different from typing when reading.

I've read a couple of threads here where people have raved about Dragon Naturally Speaking so I bought it hoping to dramatically increase speed and efficiency.

I haven't even opened it. Somehow the idea of dictating seems weird. I haven't tried and I'm not sure it would work for me.

It's one of those things that ain't broke so I don't want to mess with it.

Hmm, its main advantage is that it frees your hands. It usually needs to be trained to get used to your accent and pronunciation of words. It actually can be a royal pain to train. But it has been years since I used it, so it is likely quite superior to what it used to be.

It can have uses, eg if you have damage from repetitive stress or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I'm not sure speed really is one of them. How many words do you say a minute vs type a minute? If you talk too fast, chances are the software would mangle it up at spots.

There are instances when it could be nice. If, say, you're driving and come up with an amazing idea, just talk into the car recorder or, if you're fishing talk into the recorder on your cellphone, then later play it to the software and it will write it out for you. That kind of thing.

Yeah, I usually type around 90-100 wpm (and with 100% accuracy, woohoo!) when I know what I plan on writing.

Having to type what someone else (or in this case, something else) wants me to say just slows it down.. hence the 81 wpm results from my test. lol

I learned typing from Mavis Beacon a lifetime ago.. back when I was like 11 or 12 yrs old.. man I feel so old

I learned typing in high school. 60 girls and two guys. My average after one year was 23/wpm. Most of the girls were well above 40/wpm. I was there to be around the girls. :p Whoda thunk it would have been one of the most important things I learned in public school?

I find the thumping rhythm of the keyboard to be somehow.... I dont know...relaxing? Entrancing?

My brother says I type so loud that you can hear me from all the way across his house when Im there.

I like the sound...He said he cant tell when Im typing something passionate as the sound gets louder and faster.

  • Just to test out the "If you put 100 monkeys typing in a room, sooner or later you will get Shakespeare" theory, I just moved my fingers over the keys rapidly not trying to spell anything - I got 1 four letter word for the worst score today of '0' ...

But I DID get one word...so, maybe this proves the theory (it'll just take a lot later than sooner)

I learned to type in high school. I've been typing for around 40 years -- and I've never gotten good at it. I do type faster when writing than when copying something, but I still transpose so many letters. You wouldn't believe how thrilled I was when they came out with word processing. That eraser tape we used to have to correct typing was a PITA plus. It also got expensive if you were a bad typist. On the other hand - my handwriting is also a joke. My fingers just don't cooperate with me on tasks like that. I seem to have a wire loose in my head somewhere. I have a lot of stupid useless talents I'd be extremely willing to trade for a talent typing.

I graduated with a degree in print journalism and worked in an office for more than a decade. I've gotten better as that I'm not a complete "hen pecker" anymore but I don't even want to try to guess how slow I am. I think I took a test once and my best score was in the 20s in words per minute.
