Orbiting a star that is visible to the naked eye, astronomers have discovered a planet twice the size of our own made largely out of diamond.

The rocky planet, called '55 Cancri e', orbits a sun-like star in the constellation of Cancer and is moving so fast that a year there lasts a mere 18 hours.

OMG that is super amazing. I wonder if one day we will be able to live on such a planet.

Don't get too excited yet - just because it's diamond doesn't mean that it's gem quality diamond. Industrial diamonds aren't all that gorgeous. However - it says there is a sea of daimond (liquid diamond) with diaomond bergs floating in it. Can't remember where I read that- it was a year ago. Now if that is true, I'd really like to see that one.

I watched a documentary on blood diamonds. Any woman who watches that movie and still wants a diamond ring is a monster. Having said that, they are all diamond hungry monsters.

When I want a piece of jewelry, I go out in the field and find my OWN stones. You have a problem with that? If you want to call names - - call me something deservingly original and don't even start to lump me in with everyone else with the same anatomy.

Also - Blood Diamonds? I know a lot of diamond miners and there is no torture, child labor, or anything of the sort involved. If there is a mine where that is not the truth - don't buy stones from that particular mine.

Which Superman? The recent Kryptonian god version, or the earlier version who stood still while bullets bounced off his chest, but ducked when the crook threw the gun at him?

For all that to be true, wouldn't the atmospheric pressure have to be ENORMOUS? So a person couldn't survive there, even if everything else were perfect.

That and it's not exactly around the corner, the speed around the sun (for us 1 year) for that planet is just 18 hours which makes it kinda hard to land on and on top of that the temperatures are well hotter then hell (that + the pressure is indeed needed to create diamonds )

Well, the temperature could probably be lower if the pressure were higher. If the pressure were lower, and the temperature were high, the coal would probably just turn to ash. But, YEAH, I was just talking about ONE thing. AND, at a 18 hours for a year, the pressure and temperature are likely unstable. I wonder how long a day is. Still, the year is pretty bad.

For those that don't know what I mean, a year is the total tie for a complete orbit. The day is the time for a complete revolution about the axis on the orbit. A day could be shorter or longer, and a bigger planet would magnify the effect.

No it couldn't. Thermodynamics 101 states that the higher the pressure, the higher the temperature. Therefore, if you lower the temperature, you also lower the pressure.

Well, here's what a WF member member tells you, Paul.

    SUPERDOG Rules!!!!

Since the thread has been hijacked from diamonds to superman, I just thought I'd take the opportunity to throw this in.

Besides, Superdog Halloween costumes are hot sellers this year.

    http://www.wusa9.com/news/article/22...Spending-Soars

Americans are expected to spend $370 million on pet costumes this Halloween, according to the National Retail Federation, That's a $40 million jump from last year to outfit collies and pugs, cats and bunnies as Superman, princesses or witches.
Tad bit more lucrative than diamonds, eh what ol' bean?
