This a an interstate cruisin, sunroof open kinda song.

  • Whatever you do, don't allow "It's a Small World After All" to get stuck in your head. It's pure torture.

To me, this epitomizes the power of Steven Tylers vocal prowess,
definitely one of my personal vocal influencers. (even though this was smack dab in the middle of his addictions) only to deceive...

Funny thing is John, I was a long haired hard rock singer at the time.

I sat in with a country band one time in a little bar somewhere east of Tampa. I swear the bar was just like Porky's
So this long-haired double bass drum playing pot head northerner walks in with two full blown red neck guitar players to set up. As we're setting up the bartender comes over and tells me we're the first band to play there after the chicken wire was taken down from around the stage (I later found out that's why the groups drummer decided to stay home).
Ended up being a good night, turns out when you can play 'wipe out' with your feet it gets you shots of whiskey handed to you instead of beer bottles thrown at you

I was trying to find a good David Allen Coe Song From The seventies that may be new to some people.... I couldnt find any good ones that would offend at least 2-3 demographics here. lol

My story Rob is that I was singing one of his songs in a bar and didnt know he was there, and he sent a woman up to the stage to tell me to come out to his table on break, and he complimented my performance of it and asked me to sit and hang out. It was pretty wild. He may not have totally meant it, but he said I did it better than he did. Thats a big compliment coming from the original writer of a song.

Should have got him to sign my guitar, in fact there were alot of moments I should have done stuff like that, but at the time I was highly conscious of not coming across like a "tourist", and more like an "industry" person... trying to make it... It was prudent I was told, early on, to act cool in those situations and treat artists like regular people, and not act like a raving fan...

Looking back, since I didnt quite make it to the top, now I wish I had more of those kinds of mementos, had alot of cool experiences living in Nashville and working my way up in the music industry... by the time I really learned to work it good I was already 30, and I saw all these 18 year olds coming up... and the style weas changing.... My publishing contract ran out (was a fulltime songwriter for 7 years) and it broke me so bad that I just quit, thinking I was over the hill...

I remember my daughter walked in on me crying a few days after my contract ended, and she was petting me saying "It's okay Daddy, you'll get another deal...".

Lol...Memories. Good kid... She shore grew up to be a handful though.

I just never got back up after that...months later I found myself in a telemarketing room, not knowing anything but sales and music....and that lead to a whole nother career... a couple of years later, I got a call from legendary songwriter Charlie Craig , who I'd co written some songs with... and he got me into capital and I sat in Kieth Stegalls office and sang to him for a deal... But I did something real stupid.

I was so anxious, that I did two tanning sessions per day with tan accelerator to look good for a week before the meeting, and over did it, and burnt the crap out of myself, then I had to use bronzer to cover it...and I walked in looking like a clown, dressed like Marty Stewarts pet lobster... lol...... Shouldve just went in jeans and a Tshirt... and was so uncomfortable I blew it...

Stegall was undecided, and offered me a "development" deal, which would require me to put up half the investment capital, with no guarantees that it would go full blown... but it never happened because I didnt have the money... I think he was blowing me off though and just being polite because of Charlie. The songs were good, but I wasnt that day.

anyway, as far as telemarketing and getting into managuing and consulting...I always thought it was just a means to getting back to music, but the management career took off, then I started a business... and now I just collect fenders lol... But I love em.

Still may have a hit song someday. You can do THAT when you are 90, just not be a "face", as they call it in Nashville.

Who knows, one of the old ones might just float into the right hands, I have enough demos out there... Charlie has passed away, and I think the songs we wriote together may be valuable at some point. He has 400 chart toppers to his credit for everyone from travis tritt, to waylon, to Kieth whitley, to Alan Jackson...

Anyway, Me and Wags still have work to do on some musical ideas we talked about too, if I can ever get around to it, and get past the entrepreneurial rat race a little..

Ps. I met Kieth urban at a party by the way, right after he signed his development deal (Guess he had the money) ... I was holding my cigarette in the air, trying to keep smoke away from people (being polite as possble) and he asked me if I was a "Fag" because of it... I always thought he was a dick since then (forgive the language) , because he was being cocky, because I was with a mere indy company and someone told him that, I think he wanted to put me in my place because he had a BIG deal... I console myself by saying "I play guitar better than him".

Should have kicked his scrawny butt, not that I have any issues with peoples choice of sexuality..., but he was the man of the hour that day, it wouldnt have been a good politcal move... and Im a lover not a fighter...So I just said no, and walked away.

Good for him I guess... He sure was a cocky punk though.

Thanks in advance for indulging this expression. This went a little further than I had intended...

    -JD
