The art market has been seen some incredible sales the last few years. This seems to happen whenever the economy is bad and people with money are looking for other forms of investments. Eric Clapton bought this painting by German painter Gerhard Richter, along with a couple others, for about $2 million just 11 years ago. Nice little investment for him.

Eric Clapton sells Richter painting for record $34.2 mln - Yahoo! News Philippines

        Well said!

The painting will be worth twice that in 10 years anyway, so cheap!

Oh boy. Here we go again. Envy over those who are successful.

Read Clapton's book "Clapton." He went through some really troublsome stuff, including being raised by some weird folks.

Today he divides his time between three homes. One near London, one in Antigua, and one in Columbus, OH - where his wife's family if from.

He gives a ton of money to support his Crossroads centers for addiction treatment, and any musician who needs help can get it there - free. He built the first Crossroads center in Antiqua because at the time there was no place on the island for addiction treatment.

I would be willing to bet some of the profit from selling that painting will go towards treatment for people who can't afford it. It's what Clapton does.

That actually was my first thought when I saw this story. I know he has sold some of his guitars and other things to fund his drug treatment center.

Sounds like an investment. What I get from reading his wikipedia page is that Richter had an annual turnover of 120million in 2004 and his artwork is consistently in auctions. It is ridiculous how high the prices for these paintings are though.

He is still painting also. These prices for works by living artists is amazing. I'm not a huge fan of Richter, but he is a good artist and I do like the fact that he paints in a couple different styles: photorealism and abstract.

It wasn't that long ago that Jasper Johns became the first living artist to have a work of art sell for over $1 million. Now, there are quite a few who have done this and some are in the tens of millions. Meanwhile, Picasso's and Van Gogh's go for over $100 million!

31 million for that? I will refrain from further comment.

I don't "get" a lot of art...To me, this painting is just a bunch of paint splashed on a canvass, while "Dogs Playing Poker" is a masterpiece.

Wow. I am getting a paintball gun and a monkey. I'm gonna be RICH!

      @Tim,
As I recall from the warrior artists thread, you are a talented painter yourself.
Have you ever sold your creations?
If that stuff gets 31 extra large, what the heck....

Thanks Rob. Yes, I've sold my paintings and it's my focus now. I've only reached the four figures level so far though. Working on getting to five figures. 7 or 8 figures each seems pretty distant as of now. haha

By the way, here are a few of his photorealism paintings. The candle one sold for $16 million last year!

          Tim,

I'd love to see your work. Do you have any photos? Willing to share?

I don't have any artistic talent (save for the drums and even that is limited) so I admire people who can do this.

I did post them here in another thread or two before Mike. That's probably where Rob saw them. I'll look for those threads or maybe post some more here.
