A quarter of Japan's tsunami relief fund has been spent on unrelated projects, including renovating a government office and subsiding whaling. The revelations have ignited outcry as more than 320,000 tsunami victims remain displaced.

This is why I never give to charity, except the poppy appeal.

Looks like Japan is no different than the rest of the world. If I'd donated to that fund, I'd be asking for my money back for sure.

Reading the article - it doesn't seem to be "donated" money but higher taxes that were put in place to "aid disaster victims"....unless I missed something.

It's the same old story - taxes go up for what sounds like a "good and fair reason" - and the pols see the increase as "more money for us to spend as we please".

I hate the whaling subsidies - killing such magnificent creatures is just wrong to me.

It actually doesn't take much to be considered a 'difficult woman' -
that's why there are so many of us.

What was also surprising to me, was that while a 1/4 had been spent on unrelated projects:
Stunningly, not only has the money been missallocated, but half of the relief fund has not been given to anyone at all, due to a nominal lack of suitable applicants and procedural delays. On the one hand, the recovery is being blighted by the slowness of Tokyo’s bureaucrats to make centralized decisions to relieve troubled regions. On the other, local authorities have little experience in managing such large-scale construction projects.
On the whaling front, if you have not seen the documentary "The Cove" about the dolphins who are either killed or captured and sold to 'theme water parks'...you might be interested...surprisingly, many Japanese citizens in larger cities claimed to be unaware this type of thing was even going on...this kind of 'transparency' is apparently not discussed...
