Hello, I've recently found out that my sister has been calling manufacturing companies claiming their products caused her financial loss in order to get them to send her money. What has me really concerned is, it looks like she is using fake names or other peoples names she knows in order to to this to the same companies again and again.

I knew she was calling companies to get coupons but didnt know she was getting money from them until just recently. Just today i get a letter in the mail addressed to one of her acquaintances but it had my address on the letter.

What should i do about this? Does anyone know who i should contact to report this?

Yes, it is mail fraud. Tell her to stop immediately.

Wow ... don't know who you should contact, but I would be very concerned with mail with your address being used for fraud. Did you open the letter to see what it said? I would.

The first thing I would do is return whatever was sent to your address, so there's less room for anyone to accuse you of being part of it. Then I'd tell her you're going to return any other mail sent to your address that way, because you don't want to be involved in the criminal proceedings that are likely to result from what she's doing.

Beyond that... You need a lawyer's advice, and I ain't one.

I was going to say the same as Paul.

First, take that letter back to the post office & tell them that's not your mail (or your name?).

I'm sure that's classified as identity theft even If your sister is using fake names.

I would take a look at the mail and see if there are any numbers there to call.

If there is one, call the company and tell them that you are not involved in this at all.

Then call your sis and tell her to stop it and don't get you involved in this or else.

First I'm not a lawyer and please read this as my opinion only.

Not only does it look to me that she is committing mail fraud, but also is likely breaking additional laws pertaining to the use of her telephone to make the calls.

If she lives here in the states not only does it appear she is breaking state laws, but is also breaking federal laws.

The first thing to do is to protect yourself, so consult an attorney who specializes in criminal law and let the attorney tell you what you should do. Frankly that is the first thing you should do Monday morning. It may cost you some money, but if you fail to handle it correctly you could be facing very serious criminal charges and the very strong possibility of having to serve several years in a state or federal prison.

If you have a close relationship with your sister, you may want to warn her that if she continues to use your address along with other peoples name, you are going to report her to the authorities.

Your sister should be ashamed for bringing this kind of stress on you and very likely the other members of your immediate family and extended family.

I'm not a lawyer, but it clearly IS fraud. If caught, she COULD get sued by the federal government, companies, or industries, and have to pay fines and charges as well as all amounts she got. Who knows what else. The AGs, postmaster general, and other agencies could get involved.
