I've seen this before. I can read it, so I must be really brilliant! Actually, I think most literate people can read it. It's probably more of a gimmick to flatter you so you spread it. Not talking about the OP's post -this is one of those memes that's all over Facebook. But either way, it is interesting how the brain fills in the blanks!

I thought everyone in the entire world could read it?

Isn't the idea that our brains only look for letters and translate that into words rather than looking for whole words?

I read somewhere online a while back that if the first and last letters of the word are the same, you can read it without problem (so in this case all the first and last letters are the same only the letters in-between are different, so according to this research, all 100 people technically should be able to read it..)

Anyone that has English as a first language can read that. It's not just the first and last letter - it has to have the letters of the original word in at least most of the words and if there are one or two that are spelled wrong when jumbled, our system of bridging assumptions will allow us to deduce the meaning.

Why does this thing keep coming back to haunt us every few months?

When I saw the thread title I knew what it was.
So my first thought was, 'no a great mind would not waste it's time here'.
      Obviously mine isn't so great

I think I have read similar kind of thing before in facebook. It was there to show that human mind usually take the idea of a word by looking at the first and last letter.
