If my home was wiped out by a hurricane I would be paying any price (price not important) to get out of town to a relatives house. Standing in line in a devastated town in freezing cold weather isn't something I would ever want to do. If my home was a total loss, priority one is to get to a safe place (relatives home).

I don't see selling gas on Craigslist as price gouging because people are searching for it online, they expect the price to be higher than normal. Craigslist gas in an option, not the only source of gas. As more gas stations recover offline, the guys selling gas on Craigslist will fade away (supply & demand).

I can see selling it a an elevated cost - but not as high as they are going. These people just lost homes, jobs, towns - have SOME heart, man. We should be helping, not bilking. No wonder our society is in collapse, we will eat each other for a dime.

this happens everywhere. In front of money, most people forget about the humanity. Perhaps these affected people also have done the same thing if they were not affected and had gas with them. This is kinda bad side of the capitalism.

This isn't the way capitalists act - this is the way corporatists act. Capitalists develop and run business for a profit - but they are community spirited and minded. Once corporatism takes over, though, people will themselves do anything for a buck no matter who they are hurting. Profit becomes a reason for life itself and others are nothing but atm machines. That worries me. A lot.

Yukon - it's not a question of if people will buy it if they need it and have the money for it -- it's a matter of people being willing to price people out like that during an emergency state is shocking. And disgusting. I can see covering your own costs for time and gas - but to profit on your own community's people in a crisis situation is pathetic.

Lol, anyone here would pay $18 a gallon for gas If you were homeless & standing in a gas line during freezing weather & snow. Your not fooling anyone.

It's not price gouging, nobody has to get on Craigslist & search for gas. Don't confuse Craigslist with Gasbuddy.

I'm not selling gas (I live in SC), but I seriously wouldn't have a problem paying $18+ to get my family to a safe place ASAP (relatives home).

this is actually not a problem with paying $18 or even 20. As you said, people will pay it to get their families to safe places. However it is not good to make this kinda profit from your own community when they are in trouble.

It really comes down to how stupid people are going to be to spend that outrageous price for gas on CL. However, if they REALLY need gas fast, I guess its the only option. Although, it might prove a point of laziness for those who cant be like the rest and just wait in line.

Hello,
it is easier to get gas these days in a portable container as the lines are shorter to wait on than waiting in your car.
There are no more containers to be bought at all so if you have one you are very lucky.

I just wanted to say I wasn't trying to be mean with this thread. If I was in a bad situation (gas shortage, heavily damaged area) & could buy my out, I would do it, especially If my home was uninhabitable.

Anyways, I guess when a major disaster happens like hurricane Sandy, it shows how much we're dependent on oil & electricity.

I remember a couple years back, we had an ice storm in Upstate SC & the power was out for at least a week, I was still walking into rooms flipping light switches out of habit (lol). Things like electricity, you just expect them to be working without thinking about it.

I really don't see the problem,mits basic supply and demand. You have something, they don't, you set the price if they want it bad enough they pay. Simple.

OK, THAT is STUPID!!!!!!!! NOBODY has EVER paid such a high price for gas. When they "have paid such a high price for gas" it was NOT for the gas, but the gas ******THEN AND THERE******! So if you have to transport it an appreciable distance, or it takes say hours, the price stars dropping RAPIDLY. It could even approach ZERO!

HECK, you don't even know if it is gas or has been adulterated. It COULD be, for example, diluted E85. At the very least, it could hurt your engine, and may take MONTHS to do so.
