I don't understand why it would matter what someone else is using.

well it is a chance for a rant on the stingy (dearth) of usb ports even on brand new computers. i have 'usb hubs' on every available port and still maxed - hmmm i can now see i need another hub...

i have mouse, keyboard, headphones, printer, speakers, e-cig on one pc - other with same plus camera and wireless adapters. laptop is all of above if in use plus it's AC/DC adapter thingy.

Then if you use flash drives (memory sticks) you need one empty plug so good luck with what gets disconnected if you have to decide which one to use.

Slots got stingy long ago - they barely give you 1 or 2 spare, but then no longer playing around with adding more memory, etc - so ok wit dat...

it's gotten so that: if you: need anything? (windows upgrade, memory, capacity, speed?)

just buy a new computer, it's cheaper -

You have THAT right! 4 ports used to be STANDARD ALL OVER! NOW, they removed other ports so desktops may have 9 or more, but you are lucky with a tablet if you even have ONE. And to THINK! My first 1GB drive cost $1000, and now I am hesitating with spending $500 for a 32GB tablet!

If I knew how to find my USB port, I'd be glad to tell you. I just connect stuff where it tells me to. No clue about what port is what. This whole thread brings to mind my college advisor who told me not to bother with computer classes as it would be only secretaries who need to know this stuff. If I could take a time machine back, I would have that moron fired.

MAN, SOME said computers were FADS! Some LAUGHED at the prospect of microcomputers doing any kind of business. Flash forward about 60+ years and what has happened? Computers are in EVERYTHING! They are SO cheap and electronics has gotten SO complex that people no longer design HUGE parts of the product. They just replace the whole thing with a computer, etc...

That idiot probably figured that "since computers are ONLY used for accounting and business" that only secretaries would use them. The TRUTH was ALWAYS that they were used by HIGH visibility, HIGHLY COMPLEX, and VERY expensive areas because they were complex and expensive. As people shared/sold/standardized software, and as their use grew, making programmers more available, and as costs dropped, the market GREW! They simply got cheaper and easier. The market was ALWAYS there, they just had to sacrifice.

I mean would YOU pay $1000,000+ for a computer to do your books? NO WAY! But at a few thousand, it is almost a no brainer. Throw in all the other things you can do, and you would be FIGHTING for one!

I don't even understand the question.
A USB drive connects to something else, for example I connect my drive to a USB port on my desktop or in a laptop, Or at times as Patrician pointed out, it can be connected to a USB Hub.

      Nobody does.

It's like asking "How many refrigerator magnets do you own?".

I tried running a chainsaw from my laptop's USB port once. Got about halfway through a tree, when a popup window appeared stating that "windows has encountered a problem and needs to close".

No Kim - not 'occasionally use a usb hub' - I have one hub on each PC permanently and I need 2 on my main one.

maybe i am calling it wrong - what i am calling a hub, fits into one usb port. It has 3-4 ports on the hub - so with one USB port I can plug 3 or 4 things in.

Steve - the PC I just bought a year ago has total 4 usb ports period - I would love to see one with 8 - but you are probably talking about a professional like server size PC -- it has some other little ports in the back - not sure what all - but the only USB is 4.

PCs are cheap these days - I got a Dell xps8300 ( i7 processor)- (3.4 GHz) with 8 GB, Win7 and the whole nine yards for only $1096! (no monitor)

      That IS a hub.

MINE has 9 ports. 4 in back, and 5 in front. It is a FAST computer, but rather small and for home use. It cost me about $300 a couple years ago. BUT.... It has NO printer connection, NO keyboard connection, NO mouse connection! I am lucky it even has video or speakers. The keyboard and mouse that came with it were USB. So BASICALLY, the 9 is effectively 6! 9-(3 that are effectively MANDATORY)

It looks like THIS is the one: Acer Desktop PC - Walmart.com

Still, I am happy with THAT one. I have a newer laptop that is fast, but it is aging fast. The entire touchpad DIED one day, so I have one USB port powering a mouse. That leaves me with TWO! One may be used for an eternal drive and another may be used for various reasons. I often use one to charge my phone.

yeah Steve - I am lusting after tablets and i-pad (phone thingy) - i was the last person on earth to get a microwave - and i am like that with necessary utilities like phones - but the whole reason to have a laptop was contingency/disaster recovery - and it is now all so glunky - with every thing online and in a cloud - and pandering to phone-generation -why do i need all the stuff on my laptop?

I just really can't spend $500 so I am going to have to eventually get a phone that can do email - that will be the extent of the emergency response lol. Hi my systems all tanked with the power - bye. (then if it goes on I will have to deal with the laptop).

but my cell phone now 'verizon' is only $12 a month with no minutes - minutes are don't even ask like 36 cents. but it is only for a dire emergency like if the internet goes off and this absolutely stupid idea of having a phone/internet/tv bundle -

WTF - when the cable goes down, the internet goes down and so does the phone - so how the hell can you call Comcast? cell phone Last time the call cost me like $18 or so -

So I never use my cell phone and i will probably never use my i-phone or tablet since I am so blessed and am prepared for so many different emergencies that never happen. (knock on wood)
