Hello everyone, I'm kinda new around here. Name's Roger. Thanks for having me. I've been thinking about a question I have had for a long time and I'm just now finally getting around to asking it of as many people as I can.

Here it is: Most, if not all, of the stories and history of successful entrepreneurs depict them as "morning people". You know, they either wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning, having only slept a few hours. But they're refreshed and raring to go.

I'm just the opposite of that. I get up about 8-8:30AM and take a couple of hours to wake up and get moving. I DO NOT like to be rushed in the morning. Definitely not a morning person

I come into my home office about 11AM and usually work until about 11PM. I work in here most days M-F anywhere from 8-12 hours. I work a few hours on the weekend but try to leave the weekends for work around the house and family time.

I was just wondering if there's anyone else like me, or am I a lone duck?
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Thanks for letting me get this out of my head

Hey Roger. You sound like a very hard worker indeed. I used to wake up late, but lately I wake up at 6.30 am everyday. It's not that I'm trying to wake up early, it just happens by itself I think you can become successful and get everything done as a morning or night person, it doesn't really matter. I also believe success is more related to how smart you work, as opposed to how hard you work (although if you were to do both, you would certainly make incredible progress).

Roger, don't worry about the hours that other people work. I happen to also be a morning person but there are plenty who prefer to work at night. Find the hours that you're most productive and use them wisely because you will get twice as much done during that time than in the hours when you're unfocused.

Roger, we sound like brothers from another mother. I'm exactly the same way. Don't fret. Each individual has their own natural rhythm. What's important is to work with your natural rhythm, not against it.

Roger, I'm even farther around the dial than you. I go to bed about 4:30 AM, read for 30-60 minutes, and sleep until 11 or 12. That's by choice. I've always been a night owl. When I try to be a "day person" I'm tired all the time.

That schedule is broadly similar to mine, at least in the winter. In summer I prefer to get up a little earlier, but like Kurt, I value the flexibility of being able to pick and choose.

Wow, impressive! I usually go to bed at 3am or try to, and may spend half an hour or so, watching silly voice-over, adaptations of Star Trek, Harry Potter, etc to wind down and have a good laugh.

And usually get up around 11am and start at 1pm. So it is about 10 hours a day more or less.

Yep, IM is very labor intensive, but l will outsource one day!!!

I used to be an evening person who could work crazy late hours and couldn't get started or focused in the morning until around 11 a.m. or usually later.

But then I got on a schedule of getting up at about 8 a.m. most days due to the schedule of another family member, and now I sometimes get a lot of quality work done before noon.

I think I still feel the best and brightest in the evenings, after supper time and up until around midnight to 1 a.m. But I now look forward to hitting the home office around 9 a.m. and getting to work!

(It never, ever used to be that way, lol. How we change over time, or as the result of circumstances.)

    Hi Roger...

I hate to break it to you, but if you get up at 8-8:30 am, you ARE a morning person. If I get on a creative binge, I'm likely just going to bed when you are getting up. Often, it's the rising sun that tells me "bed time".

I've been a night shift worker my entire life and it continues into IM. As a matter of fact, one of my favorite things about IM is that I can pick and choose when I sleep.

Plus, with the Net being world-wide, I am a morning person to some people somewhere.

I'm a night owl... I naturally stay up later and sleep in longer than the night before, so my sleep cycle is constantly changing. But I actually like it this way, I think it's fun to go out at night to McDonalds or wherever to get a snack.

Another night person here. The only time 6 to 8 am even comes close to me is when I'm out rock hunting and need the daylight hours. I write from around 8 pm to around 3 - 4 am. I wake up any time I have to but if I sleep 7.25 hours, I wake up on my own.

I like to think of myself as a morning person. It's true that I like being wide awake early in the morning....equally true it doesn't happen often.

Like you, I need time to be alert before I start to do anything useful...and that takes a while.

That's a beauty of working at home - you can follow your body's natural rhythm instead of conforming to work hours and an alarm clock.

Thanks OP for starting this thread. Because I too am a night owl. Hoot hoot!! lol

But, yeah, I can definitely see where the question is coming from, considering that most folks are conditioned to operate within the 6am to 6pm ( or later for some folks ) spectrum. - Workaholics much?

That is why I appreciate the whole concept of having an 'online business'. As someone here mentioned already, that the 'net is open 24/7. This in turn gives us the opportunity to do business at really any time we like. Yeah for that.

well, ben franklin once said "early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise". There IS a lot of truth to that. all too many are like I am, going to bed late, waking up early. but if you go to bed early and wake up early, you are likely to get better sleep and at a time when most of the area is practically DEAD! That means you will be better able to strike early when things are best.

Of course, that assumes that you need help or supplies. And don't forget, THEY needed more light and had an agrarian society, so it was more true then. I HAVE done a lot while others were asleep. ALSO, if you outsource, to a very foreign land, the best time to work may well be at night. In india, they probably work around 10pm-8am ET They are about 10.5 hours ahead, so 10-8 ET is about 8:30am-6:30pm IT. BTW they often claim to work an average of 10 hours in IT, so that is the reason for the spread.

What happens if I stay up late enough that I'm up "early" in the AM and I've done plenty of work hours before Ben gets up?

I like the early hours for working - it's still and quiet, and there are no interruptions. Tend to regret it on the days my daughter's alarm goes off at 6am! But, always been a night owl; no matter how tired, I simply cannot get to bed early.

You will probably find a lot of night-owls in Australia!

Most of the time we are dealing with US, or other countries in that part of the world, so usually 11pm up to 3am is about late afternoon time for them.

And especially if you are dealing directly with someone on Skype, then being a night-owl is necessary!
