Anyone know where to exchange currency?

I have a Canadian $10 that I would like to exchange back to USD. I don't want to go all the way to the airport just for that. I tried my bank, Wells Fargo, but get this - they want to charge $15 to exchange currency. So I would be netting a loss and paying THEM $5, which would be totally idiotic for me to do.

So, does anyone have any other ideas where I can exchange currency for a low or no cost?

This is just a wild guess, but how about a travel agent? They might give you a fair exchange, knowing they can do the exchange in reverse for another client.

Hmmm, not a bad suggestion GT, I'll call around tomorrow to see if some of the local travel agencies do currency exchange. Thanks!

I'm open to any other suggestions as well!

    GT,

Travel agents don't really exist anymore. There are simply travel salespeople that ACT like and want to be CALLED agents. It is much like "tech support". Ironically, the AAA AUTO CLUB acts more like a travel agent than most "travel agents". I once asked a "travel agent" how to get to aarhus. You know, a large city in Europe and probably one of the best known in Denmark. She didn't have a CLUE! There is no airport in aarhus apparently, and there is apparently NO intercontinental airport in the mainland of denmark. You have to fly into copenhagen, and then fly to tirsdrup. The only other way to do this within denmark is to waste 3 hours on a ferry.

    Chris,

SOME banks MIGHT! There might be some currency exchanges, ESPECIALLY up north, in the US. SOME companies that trade precious metals do. And WESTERN UNION does apparently.

Do you have a Bank of America branch near you? I think that many of them exchange foreign currency. I don't know if there is a separate charge.

American Express offices also offer currency exchange but my recollection is that they have a basic transaction charge like the one you found at Wells Fargo. My daughter returned from a school trip about 10 years ago with a 20 Euro note and it is still sitting in my desk drawer because the hassle and cost of exchanging it was more than it was worth to me. I also have a 10 dollar Cdn bill in my desk for the same reason.

Yup, this $10 CDN note is from 2007-2008. Been in my wallet since!

    Is there a local casino?
    1. Buy a chip
    2. Cash in a chip

Hmmm, well that's a good thought too. I guess it would make sense for a casino to do a currency exchange.

You know what, that's actually not a bad idea at all! I'm obviously not worried about the money that much (otherwise I would've cashed it in at some point over the past 5 years). It's just the principal of the matter. I have 10 bucks sitting in my wallet doing absolutely nothing, and my bank wants to charge more than what the note is worth the exchange it. Absurd! However, I learned a couple good possible places to exchange the money, which satisfied my curiosity. But the easiest and probably nicest thing I could do is donate it. Salvation Army donation might just be the best solution!
