Based on recent news involving Bob Costas, a friend of mine sent this to me and I thought it was worth sharing.
Enjoy!

Doctors

(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.

(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.

(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171

Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.

Now think about this:

Guns

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. (Yes, that's 80 million)

(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.

(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188

Statistics courtesy of FBI

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, 'Guns don't kill people, doctors do.'

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT Almost everyone has at least one doctor.

This means you are over 9,000 times more likely to be killed by a doctor as by a gun owner!!!

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!

Out of concern for the public at large, we withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention!

I'm sure that doesn't even include many other harmful effects of medical treatments, such as overdoses and addiction to prescription medications, damage caused by unnecessary surgical procedures and deaths caused by the "normal" side effects of drugs.

And to be fair, the gun stats don't include intentional deaths, wars, shootings where the victim lived or robberies and other crimes that involved guns.

Naturally. The whole guns vs. doctors argument is silly and I don't think the original post was meant to be taken too seriously. Guns are obviously weapons while the mission of doctors (supposedly) is to heal people. So what's amazing is that you can even make close comparisons at all between them.

It wasn't about wars. It's about gun control and how fixated we are on accidental shootings while pharmaceuticals cause so much death - yet are not being monitored better. Even if you add purposeful shootings, both by criminals and people defending themselves the stats don't add up to nearly those dying of pharms.

Hmmm, l would like to see what the stats are for someone outside of the mainstream medical arena, that has a high success rate. With alternative treatments?

Sure to be substantially better than the doctors, cut out and throw drugs and zap the area approach, to curing serious illness?

That would put them at risk of being killed by a doctor.
