Need help with a name for my New Year project

I have permission from the mods to ask this here.

I'm not very creative, and I'd like to ask for your help naming my project for next year and (hopefully) beyond.

I'm a vet in my day job, and I want to establish a non-profit organisation that will help to look after the pets of homeless people in my area. Yeah, I know that if you can't afford a pet, you shouldn't have one but for some people, their pet is all they have and it literally keeps them alive. It would be good to be able to help them with their pet care needs until they're back on their feet.

So, we need a name. I can't offer you payment for your ideas, because any funds we raise are going into food/medication/parasite control but hopefully you'll get a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart and that will be enough.

One thought I had was "Animal Outreach", but I'd love to hear from anyone who is a little more creative. I know the name isn't the be all and end all, but it'd be nice to have something that rolls off the tongue and sticks in the mind.

Happy Christmas to you and yours.

Audrey

You can go with Pet Shelter. It's not much creative, just something that came in my mind.

Thanks kaytav, doesn't need to be creative, just memorable, and that's pretty self-explanatory.

Finally, a thread I can participate in that I won't get in trouble

I was thinking "loyal friend animal healthcare"

Learning about salesmanship is tough, and empathy is a pain. I really don't like it. Imagine being homeless, and the only thing on this planet that cares about you is an animal. And it is sick and dying.

Audrey - I love this idea. One of the most well behaved and best trained dogs I've ever met belonged to a homeless man. When the man was arrested his dog was taken into the steel building where "confiscated goods" were housed. The dog was tied to a post in the building and listed as "personal possessions".

A friend called me about the animal and I went and got it out. I left my name and phone number for the owner and took the black lab home. Great dog - well groomed, well fed, well behaved.

About 2 weeks later the owner called. Was out of jail and desperate to find his dog. It was a touching reunion when I took his dog to him.

One thing is to choose a name that describes what the project is - which is why I kept thinking of "haven".

    Another potential approach:

    Street Safe Pets

    Street Pet Refuge

Emergency Street Pet Refuge (or shelter or haven or...)

That's the sort of idea I was mulling as well - Travlinguy also has one with 'Pet Hostel' that sounded kinda good - I sort of like the feeling of that...a hostel or haven...

It should be something that stresses it is for Homeless or Displaced people to 'haven' their pets - and not just some place you can drop off an unwanted pet, or a cheap shelter hotel to drop off Fido while you go on holiday...

Animal shelter, while general, has a certain connotation to it...

or instead of a 'MASH'...a 'HASH'? Homeless Animal Service (or Street) Hostel?

While it would be fun or nice to come up with a clever or catchy name...'Critter Sitter','Pause for Paws', Rest-pet (get it - respite?) it still would probably need to stress the 'utility' of the group it is trying to serve - displaced pets, a 'street retreat' - and not a doggy daycare just anyone can drop off their pet without good cause for free...

just thinking out loud...kudos for the cause...

This is an option. Another option is to describe the benefit of the project, such as "Forever Friends". Using "benefits" is copywriting 101.

IMO, the most important point to make is the goal is to keep homeless owners and their pets together. Otherwise, it just sounds like another pet shelter.

A tagline can be used to describe what it is:

Forever Friends - Giving pets of the homeless a home so they don't lose each other.

Not sure of a good name (I'll think on it) but a good logo would be a hand holding a paw. Still connected to the owners that is. whew.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll run them by my "partner in crime". I can't take any credit for this, one of my nurses has been talking to me about it for a few months and she's pushing for it to happen in the new year.

I like your idea, Sal, about the hand holding the paw as a logo.

Kay, I met a guy earlier this year who lived in his car with his large Ridgeback mix. He'd sleep upright in the front seat so his dog could stretch out comfortably in the back. These people try and look after their pets better than they do themselves.

I won't be doing that, Delsworld. I'm not keen on taking business from my colleagues. Regular paying customers can keep going to their usual vet. We'll be looking at other ways of fundraising.

I like your choice of the word "companion"... it's appropriate. Thanks for your ideas.

Kurt - I agree about the "sounds like"

You don't want it to be viewed as a regular "shelter" with the connotations associated.

Seemed to me the tricky part is using a name that the homeless will recognize, remember and identify with as "help for my situation". It also needs to sound "trustworthy/helpful" as it's not easy for them to leave their pet or trust they can get it back.

Good luck with this Audrey - it's a great project.
