Question about US English: subs?

Hi,

I am translating a text and found a word of which I am not sure what it means. Dictionaries don't know it either.

The word is subs

Here the two occurences:

..(she is) placing her deli order for the subs ...

With subs in hand, she rounds the corner for the self check-out

I guess it means the items she is buying, but I am not sure, also I would be interested for what that short form is.

I never heard subs in Australia but I don't go shopping so I might have missed it.

Thanks

She's buying a hoagie, a sandwich. Short for submarine.

I'd be surprised if you didn't have Subway sandwich shops in Australia. You can't move two feet is the US without running into one.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

      Thanks Dan,

that's it probably. Of course there is Subway at every other corner in Australia, however, I have never been to it and will probably never be. And I don't have much contact to the age group of their customers .. look at my avatar.

Also called "heroes" in some areas. I think I've eaten at a Subway once -more than enough.
