I heard this on the news. I for one, will NOT be using Instagram. Personally, I really don't like FB either - they are too sneaky!

  • Thanks April,
Glad I double-checked to see if there was already a post - I just saw this story and wanted to put out a warning as well - this just doesn't seem right, that they can do this without your right to say who or what business can use your photos, likeness, etc. in representation, with no regard to privacy or discretionary choice by you...

      I don't know. I kind of disagree.

You have the choice to use the service or not. If you choose to use it, then these are their terms. If you do not use it, nothing to worry about.

Don't get me wrong. I think it stinks they made this decision, but it's their platform. They can do what they want.

Is this truly a "now they say" - or has it always been part of using Instagram and no one noticed the fine print? I don't know - that's why I'm asking.

Never mind - I read it wrong - it does seem to be a policy change.

This is a risk of all "services" like Instagram - they own the site and most terms give them the right to change the terms....

They are owned by Facebook, what do you expect?

I have seen several tweets by various celebrities as well about this. A lot of them were basically saying they will be "re-thinking" using Instagram (which I basically think means if they can come to some sort of deal, receiving a small commissions when one of their photos is shared, they will keep posting. If not, sounds like a boycott).

I wouldn't mind if they sold the prints, and you received a royalty fee. Some of the photos on there are simply amazing, taken by both amateur and professional photographers around the world.

Interesting to see how this develops.

They must have been feeling the heat from the backlash. How much you want to bet either they or other companies find one or more creative ways to do it? All they need is deep pockets and lawyers.

I heard they cancelled the new TOS due to members deleting their accounts by the droves.

I guess they figured no accounts means no business let alone pics to steal.

Instagram in the danger zone - Fortune Tech

Funny - when I was reading this thread yesterday I thought "they just ruined their business".

It will be difficult, if not impossible, to gain back the trust of users. People think once a company has tried to slide something like this by - you can almost guarantee they'll try something else in the future.

Here is the exact wording of their original revised terms of service :

"a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos, and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you."

Basically they could/can do WTF they like. Your face could star in a global marketing campaign for any product and you couldn't do anything about it and you would not be paid a penny.

Time to switch over to Flickr or some other photo sharing site. The thing I liked about Instagram is it is mobile friendly and easy to share on social media.
