How much do you pay for internet access?

Just paid my cox cable bill - $55.00 just for internet. Seems way out of line to me.
No complaints about the service. It's fast and reliable. Just thought I'd see if there
were any better deals out there. AT&T advertises DSL starting at $14.95/mo. for
a year. Anybody have any thoughts about that? This is in San Diego, Cailf. if that
makes a difference.

TIA

I pay about $25 a month for cable DSL. Not exactly FIOS but I can't complain. Since I blog and write for a living, I don't need much bandwidth. I don't run bots or heavy duty traffic bots so the speed I am getting is enough for my needs.

I have always been very satisfied with Comcast/Xfinity internet. Although the price is different if depending on if you get a bundled service or not.

Not sure if you have Comcast in your local area, but if so it might be worth looking into.

$30 a month for the 4g/3g data plan on my smart phone. It's a hot spot that powers my PCs. I keep it because it's unlimited bandwidth. Verizon doesn't offer that anymore.

Here in our country it seems low price when counted in dollars,
but service is not that good!
I have three internet connections to keep my business going:
    1. DSL only 2MB at home ($15/month)
    2. DSL at office ($25/month)
    3. Wireless Net as a backup if above two connections go down (which does sometime
    at most unexpected times) ($10/month)

Equivelant to about $70 flat rate for super fast unlimited broadband and anytime landline calls to UK. Its currently 40mb/s but can be upgraded for a little more to 100mb/s. I don't really need to as the current speed is more than adequate. The typical monthly bill is closer to $85 because sometimes a few calls are made to mobiles from the landline, which are charged.

Yes, I do get quite a bit of junk mail from them, now I think about it (you're with VirginMedia, too?). And from some of their competitors.

I'd rather have the junk mail, though, than the people from "Sky" ringing the doorbell to offer me their latest package.

Wow, to people who are used to 50Mb/s it does sound extortionate. But I suppose it was the same here when it was newly available, and prices always drop. In another 3 years' time, that'll probably be $40 or something, where you live? (And probably not very many marketers really need that speed, anyway?).

Well, the gold standard in the US USED to be the T1! It was called a TRUNK LINE! It actually plugged into this huge cabinet, maybe about 7' by like 3', etc... The cabinet was called a SWITCH, and controlled a LATA. So it was nothing to sneeze at. A T1 only ran at 1.5Mbps! That is only a little faster than the 10bt connections that used to run the faster parts of the internet. Most of the internet now is probably 10 times as fast, and parts are like 100 times as fasr. OH, and AT&T less than 10 years ago was happy about some 6GB lines going between california and new york.

Of course, AT&T by almost every measure is DEAD now! The company is physically, locationally, etc... DIFFERENT. And I used to have AT&T ALSO! At least their cell phone "service". They apparently didn't know why people used phones! SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!! I told them I did NOT care if the phone "worked"! I did NOT care if they "provided service"! I told them the OBVIOUS!

      CUSTOMERS DON'T WANT PHONES!
      THEY DON'T WANT "SERVICE"!

They want to be able to call and talk to who they want to talk to! They told me that I couldn't do this in detroit(where they claimed to have service), or in DC or virginia(where they claimed to have service) using the phone they sold me, or the replacement they sent. This was ODD, since all that worked a month or two earlier, and worked in other areas. Anyway, I cancelled the "service".

I'm paying $17 for a 100 mbps connection, cable TV, and a landline. It would have costed just $3 to get the 150 mbps connection.

Note: it's not broadband, it's just plain old internet delivered by wire.

What's shocking, though, is the price for a cellular plan, or prepaid plans, when compared to US prices. I pay about $7-$8 a month, and get 2500 networks minutes, 75 national minutes, unlimited network SMS's and 75 national SMS's, and 150 mb of internet usage. And I have a prepaid card.

The thing is, there are only three major carries here, and each one has a monopoly in one part of the country, so there's little need for national minutes/SMS's.

Something similar in the US would set one back at least $40 per month, I think?

That IS broadband! Broadband means the band is wide and delivers upwards of about 1Mbps! Plane old internet over telephone wire only goes to maybe 64K, and that is with special equipment.

Because mobile carriers here are the only ones to use the term "broadband" when pitching their data services, I thought that broadband means internet delivered wireless, through a cellular network. My bad.

NOPE! It predates commercial wireless use, and predates cellular, and predates even wide spread use of fiber. A T1 was considered broadband and fixed, wire.

Of course, most wireless and cellular today happen to be broadband. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadband

For Cell Phone it is not entirely true. Here si what I pay to T-Mobile.

      Unlimited network minutes
      unlimited Text (SMS)
      unlimited Internet (1st 2GB/per phone on 4G)
      700 National minutes
Total 4 cell phones for $120
We use our own phones, if we decide we can get free phones (depending on the model) but will be locked in 2 year contract.

For internet I have a bundled service (Comcast) with TV, and we pay $130 with download speed between 25Mbps to 35 Mbps and upload around 2/3Mbps. Rarely, service goes down.

Trust me, AT&T DSL blows, I feel like I took a step back in time with 56k dialup. AT&T throttles their DSL like crazy.

I can't get cable where I live, otherwise I wouldn't care what cable charged as long as the speed was fast.

Around $160 per month for 50Mbps fibre optic broadband with landline calls and and around 250 T.V. channels.

100Mbps will be available in the new year (free upgrade).

I cant imagine life without high speed internet. When I use friends/relatives computers who are on 5Mpbs it feels like I've gone back 10 years..

I'm happy with the service (and price). I was one of the early adapters to fibre optic when it first came available here, and I was paying close to $250 per month for a while. IMO it's well worth every penny.

    • Time Warner's Antics in Wilson, N.C. Give Another Reason to Snip the Cable | Fast Company

(*note - this story is from 2009)
A few thousand residents in Wilson were fed up with paying a high price for low-speed broadband and limited cable service, so they founded a community-owned ISP based on optical-fiber networks running to the front door called Greenlight. Compared with the limited channels, slow data rates and expensive fees charged by the cable company, Greenlight is a fantastic bargain. The basic package includes 81 channels, 10 mbps down and upload speeds, and unlimited long distance phone calls to the U.S and Canada for $99. A similar package from Time Warner Cable offers fewer channels, slower upload speeds and costs 40% more--and that's the "introductory offer" price. Greenlight even has a top-end broadband service that rips along at an obscene 100mbps, ten times faster than TWC's best. So what is TWC doing about this--improving its service, dropping prices and offering great incentives to tempt customers back into the fold? Nope, the company is lobbying the North Carolina senate to outlaw community ISPs on the grounds that it can't compete.
