Student expelled for refusing to wear RFID tracking chip badge

Under the "Smart ID" program, ID badges have been issued with a tracking chip, which students must wear when attending school. The school badges, worn like a necklace, contain a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and links to their social security number. This allows the school to track the student's location after leaving campus and for as long as the badge is on the student's person.

What this post did not mention is why the program is being implemented in the first place. I found this quote...

The program is meant to improve classroom attendance in schools seeking to maximize per-student funding from the state. There are plans to expand the program if it is successful.
(Bold is mine.)

here,

Texas Student Refuses to Wear

and this quote

The tracking devices have been attached to all student ID cards in two high schools in the Northside Independent School District, as a pilot program that could be implemented in 100 other schools. The aim is to track student attendance, and ultimately, help schools attract more funding by proving higher attendance rates.

The program has been discussed/argued to death - it's a pilot program meant to keep students in school during the school hours and maintain federal funding levels.

It works as school attendance rose - and those skipping classes dropped dramatically. Most of the students don't have a problem with it.

If this is the student's biggest concern - she must have an easy life to begin with. It's a "me and my rights" argument that seems a bit silly and self-serving.

I see you didn't think this through. If you look at it through the prism given openly, it almost ALWAYS looks good! Just today, a company used their data to determine I needed something, and reminded me of it. HEY, that is NICE! But if someone uses that data to build a fallacious profile, or build a picture of me, or hurt me in some way, that is bad.

A school in Massachusetts gave away laptops to students! NEVER MIND that they treat the public school kids that they are paid to TEACH like rich people on some RETREAT, and gve them THOUSANDS of dollars worth of goodies for a moment. Let's disregard THAT! OK, a laptop, sounds NICE, HUH? Well the had cameras! Good SO far! And software, and GPS, to view the surroundings and track stolen computers! Sound good so far? Reasonable?

OK, they were SPYING on students! some were even UNDRESSING in front of the computer. HEY, it's not like they thought the computer would be watching.

Now does THAT sound good? Imagine if kids came to YOUR place and left their computers running near where you had tax records, or patient records!

But HEY, it sounded good when it was to track thieves, etc....

Take googles search history If someone searches on your computer, it could tie you to something in a wierd way, and a policeman could draw a profile to ARREST you! It has happened before.

And what if someone wanted to hurt someones kid, etc?

The idea of the badges is problematic anyway.

Sorry about that. I did an advanced search for student (not students) and didn't see anything about this topic.

Heck, if I was a high school student in Texas, I'd organize a rebellion to ship all the tracking badges all over the place. Hard to get anymore funding when all the students are partying in China, Alaska, Hawaii, Russia, Tuvalu, Turkey, Iraq, etc. Sure, it would hurt my school, but it would help prevent the governments continued encroachment into the daily lives of students.

      Steve,

I believe the one that had the laptops being used to take pictures of students at home was near Philadelphia. (Unless there were multiple incidents?) But yeah... That shows the risks of this stuff about as well as any incident I've seen yet.

For the folks suggesting shipping the cards to other countries... Those things have pretty limited ranges.

Yeah, I seem to recall there were multiple cases. They didn't say if this software was custom, but I HAVE heard of freely available software to do it. USUALLY for tracking computers, or monitoring your area that it is in(like a home or office).

As for the limited ranges... HECK, I remember a time when companies were BRAGGING about ranges of like 20 feet. So it was a big deal then. The purpose THEN was for inventory tracking. Then again, that was a long time ago. NOW, one company is saying "Ultra-long read range - 20+ feet with battery-assisted sensor. This long range opens the door to use wireless sensors in many new, innovative applications." 20 feet probably wouldn't even work for attendance in the room, unless you have several sensors.

STILL, shipping them away DOES make them worthless! MAYBE you could obscure the ID, and stick it somewhere on a UPS truck! The trackers would have fits trying to track you around town. Maybe every now and then you would appear to wait in front of the school!

Still, what I spoke about happened and, if a person at a regular private company did that, they would be THROWN IN JAIL. Some people have been locked up for having a few partially nude pictures of kids.

I would get on Ebay & buy a few hundred RFID tags then sew them into the inside of my clothes. Good luck trying to determine which of the 247 RFID tags is the correct tag.

Does this student also avoid Facebook and Twitter - not carry gadgets or phones that have gps or that might share personal info?

Or is the only problem a badge that never has to leave the school property and is in use only during school hours? If you are attending your classes - why do you care if the school knows you are in class?

That's exactly the mindset these people want you to have. It's simple conditioning. Unfortunately the real agenda is much different. Power and control...all in the name of safety and security of course. And the sheeple will happily and compliantly follow.

OBVIOUSLY, there are different standards, and they have good isolation. if you buy them on ebay, they might not even NOTICE THEM!

  • RFID tags are low density - you have to be right next to a reader to get information.

GEE, then WHAT are they using at stores? Stores use low quality cheap %^&* and yet they would be virtually WORTHLESS if they didn't have a CONCEALED range exceeding 3'! Admittedly, from what I have seen, store detection posts probably DON'T exceed 5', but it IS between there. And those are the CHEAP ones. Supposedly the more expensive ones have ranges exceeding 20'.

You need to be within aprox.5 feet (or less) of a reader to see what is on the tag...

Exactly - if students pass a reader as they enter their classroom, it makes it easy to see who is in class -and who isn't.

It's like a high tech roll call.

Pass through, cover up the badge, and LEAVE! You commit hooky, and the school gts the money. THEY, NOW, consider it WIN/WIN while it is LOSE/LOSE!
