In a Gadda Da Vida has long been one of my favorite rock anthems ... the long version of course. The power guitar, the drum solo and voice are all great. The only thing I never liked was that darned organ. Maybe it's just me, but those high organ notes are almost as bad as fingernails on a chalkboard.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

imho Iron Butterfly is one of the most under-rated bands - of course they are really only famous for 'In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida' - "only"

(and please boycott the LA Times for calling it 'heavy metal') -- to me it is right up there with 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Free Bird' as possibly being THE ROCK ANTHEM -

        Iron Butterfly

3M I almost never disagree with you but here I do - it is just those 'hidden' not so famous faces that make these songs what they are - not just the 'mascots'... and I think it is fitting that even though they are nameless faces that at least they should be acknowledged for their contributions when they go out.

IRON BUTTERFLY - IN A GADDA DA VIDA - 1968 (ORIGINAL FULL VERSION) CD SOUND & 3D VIDEO - YouTube

Pat, looks like we think alike often.
Iron Butterfly was underrated. Not sure why,but I swear I spent the night of the 20th listening to Iron Butterfly on Youtube. While they were best known for In A Godda Da Vida, They really had a lot of great songs.

Dennis, I had to smile when i read this. I'm sure you remember back in those days an organ was almost a requirement in most bands.

Oh yeah ... Deep Purple, for example, was one of the best bands with an organ. Loved the way they used it. It's not all of In a Gadda that hurt my ears, just those high notes.

      3M,
Not sure where you are from or located at, but for someone like me where music has been a very integral part of my life, all these people have meaning to me.

Clapton dying would be a major news media event. No one could miss it. These musicians that were not quite God status need to be remembered too in my opinion.

I almost posted that one too Terra.
It is sad that they really are basically remembered for one song when they put out a lot of good music. I'll have to check later, but I have their first three or four albums on Vinyl still.

      LOL!

      No it's not!

My mom was the coolest lady! She also had the Doors, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. She is from whom I got my love of Rock from.

Loved Deep Purple. Another band that put the organ to good use was Led Zep.
Both Jon Lord and John Paul Jones used Hammond Organs, and played through Leslie speakers created a unique sound.
