I am looking to do a re install after a hardware upgrade and wanted to go 64bit. I currently use XP32 because it works the way I like. I am not sure if I should just go with windows 7 in the hope it will be stable to use or stick with windows xp 64. I am interested to know what everyone else uses.

Personally, I think windows 7 is about as good as XP. The 64bit version can use more memory. I think the 32 bit can as well. But SOME software might break. Win 7 (at least 64 bit) is only maybe 96% compatible with XP 32. Some older software WILL break. I have an early win7 version, and supposedly the later versions are better, but I HAVE tried to fully update mine.

8 tries to dumb down the interface AGAIN! I have heard that it isn't really good. On windows 7, I tried the windows shell(To try to make windows look more like a windows version), and only had three complaints. TWO were supposedly fixed YESTERDAY! And the THIRD? That a STUPID move M/S made several years ago. They went from a program selection that works for my system to one that is near WORTHLESS! I guess, unless you try to be as eclectic as I am, or live on earth and try to work for/with others, or use several different computers etc...., you will have no problem. I often have to run programs from the start/run option

anyway, I don't have much hope for them fixing that design flaw. You won't notice unless you have more than 136 directories. MANY may only have about 15. Add MS OFFICE with LYNC, and it is 3 more. Add quicken and quickbooks pro, it is like another 3. I have 4 databases on my system, so that is like another 8 directories. I have like 5 languages on my system, so that is maybe another 15 directories. etc...

Well I decided to give win 7 x64 a try. I have win 7 on another machine but didn't use it much other than to watch movies. I always liked xp for the simplicity. Doesn't seem to be as bloated as win 7. I need x64 to take advantage of my extra RAM now tho.

Yep, you will like W7 it looks nice and can do a couple of extra things XP can't, l have both, 2 computers).

      But....

W7 does have some skeletons in the cobard, firstly you can't grab a file and put it where you want on W7. It works on the alphabet, etc, so unless you start mucking around with AA,s ect all folders will go where W7 wants them to go.

Also don't use the voice-recognition, or be careful when you do!

It works reasonably well, but if you leave it active, and make the wrong sound it can and probably will go on a rampage through your PC and delete some of your files!

Well l think that is about it, l used XP for a couple of years and it took me a while to come around with W7, but now, l might be going slightly more towards W7 than XP!

I would have thought Ubuntu would be difficult to service the needs of an all round IM . I would image a lot of software was built with windows in mind. I know a lot of commercial service terminals run Ubuntu. The sort of things you see in shopping malls that give information and directions

I still use Windows XP home edition. Don't bother Windows 8 OS because it is too much distraction and confusing. Hands down to Windows 8.

Since my computer is ancient and still running, but I am planning to buy a new iMac, but I am a broke state government employer. That sucks. Hopefully, I learn about this forum, so it will help me to get succeed in internet marketing one day.

I'm still using Windows XP on both my desktop and my laptop. I like it (to the extent of being willing to pay a little extra to have it installed for me when I bought each of them).

From everything I've heard, I'm pleased to have avoided "Vista" although Windows-7 might be ok?

That Metro interface turns me off as well, if that's what you're referring to. I find Windows 8 bittersweet, regardless if you use it on a tablet or on a PC.

On a tablet, the Metro interface, with its big thumbnails, is great for fingers, but the old Windows interface is not. On a PC, however, the situation is opposite, with the Metro interface being too big for the mouse pointer. I guess Windows 8 is either bittersweet or sweet-bitter, depending whether you're using a PC or a tablet.

    Hello there!

Windows 7 is suitable for 64bits. I used to use Windows7 64bits and experienced the astounding performance of the operating system. Currently, I have upgraded to Windows 8 pro which delivers high quality performance and all my application software run efficiently. I would recommend Windows 8 as it would be wise to go for the latest innovations in technology, however, even windows 7 would work just fine.

I would recommend XP only if your hardware does not support windows 7 and above but since you have stated that you have upgraded your hardware configuration, Windows 7 or Windows 8 would be suitable for you.

    Thanks

On which machine? I currently have systems that run Windows 98, WinXP, Win7, Vista, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Netbook Mix, Mac OSX, iOS 6, and a couple flavors of Android. (Plus whatever the iPod Nano uses, although that probably shouldn't count.)

Oh... and I have servers running Centos, Redhat, and FreeBSD.

I'm pretty much OS-agnostic. The only real preference I have keeps pushing me toward buying a PowerPC, so I can run AmigaDos 4.0.

      Boing-boing, bay-bee.
