What is the max number a thread starter can post inside of the same post,
before it gets locked.

Is it 50?

Are you thinking this is an automated event?

    If not...

I would say it varies depending on the topic, how repetitive the replies are, whether or not new information is coming forth, whether the OP is bumping the thread to get attention or is genuinely engaging the participants, how civil the conversation is, how much "moderation" is necessary, and probably a few other things that aren't coming immediately to mind.

If it's automated, this would be the first time I've heard of that.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

I was told by a few people over the last year that if the original thread maker
makes a certain amount of posts inside the same thread it does automatically
      lock the thread.

I was told the number as well but i forget what it is.

I hardly ever start threads so it has never mattered to me before,
but i have a thread going strong that was started in january, and its
just getting good now. i just don't want to kill it.

You were incorrectly informed, at least at any levels I've ever seen.

I believe there's an upper limit on the total amount of posts in any single thread, but that's related to the database structure AIUI, rather than any one person's posts. We've had threads in OT in which individuals had hundreds of posts.

As Dennis suggested, we will lock threads if it looks like the OP is bumping them to keep them on the front page of a section. That's not automatic, though.

    Interesting.

    Perhaps a little experimental experimentation?
