A world without Hostess Twinkies? Fear not, have 'Dreamies' instead

Another cliff, another soft landing.

As we hurtled off the 2012 snack-food cliff into a year devoid of Hostess Twinkies, it turned out there -- at the bottom -- was a sponge-cake pad of dextrose goodness.

I spied it at my supermarket: 99-cent cylindrical-shaped creme-filled cakes called "Dreamies." :p

They are made by a Georgia bakery called Mrs. Freshley's, which to me sounds like the name of Belle Watling's whorehouse in "Gone with the Wind," but never mind.

BTW ding dongs, those devilsfood rolls, cupcakes, and the hand pies, are ALL copied ALSO! There are probably no fewer than 4 BIG companies, that are at least NATIONWIDE, that have versions.

Wow ... not being a junk food aficionado, I haven't kept up with the bakery wars. Sounds like they need a patent or something. lol.

        from wikipedia:

In the United States, under current patent law, the term of patent, provided that maintenance fees are paid on time, are:
For applications filed on or after June 8, 1995,[1] the patent term is 20 years from the filing date of the earliest U.S. application to which priority is claimed (excluding provisional applications).[2]
For applications that were pending on and for patents that were still in force on June 8, 1995, the patent term is either 17 years from the issue date or 20 years from the filing date of the earliest U.S. or international (PCT) application to which priority is claimed (excluding provisional applications), the longer term applying.[3][4]
The patent term in the United States was changed in 1995 to bring U.S. patent law into conformity with the World Trade Organization's Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) as negotiated in the Uruguay Round. As a side effect, it is no longer possible to maintain submarine patents in the U.S., since the patent term now depends on the priority date, not the issue date.
And these things were around when I was a little kid! I didn't find out about most of the copycats until a bit later. Anyway, they are simple recipes that have an instant appeal so OF COURSE companies will copy if given a chance.

I've had several freinds on FB post that they have recently seen Dreamies appear in their local stores and they swear they are even better than Hostess Versions.

Just as a nostalgic exercise, as I haven't had a Twinkie since I was a kid, I may try a Dreamie. lol

  • What if we just 'highjack' the Twinkies name, and make the same thing but with sprinkles - and call them "Twinkles"

I tend to bake cakes at home in my toaster oven, sometimes incorporating the little marshmallow puffs or slathering with the jarred variety. Just never been a real fan of the other prepackaged stuff. If goodies come from a real local bakery that's more like it for me because it was probably baked fresh in the morning. Our local bakery runs out of the fun stuff by early afternoon and then there is no more.

Now, my family (all guys) probably have a different opinion

I actually LIKE the idea of a little bakery that can be trusted.
