Hearing this song today, tagging and discovering it, gave me some food for thought.
(Translation: flipped the ADHD switch on...) Lemme 'splain..

After a little research , found out this song made it as high as # 3 on the charts in 1976. I was 12 years old.
Up until today I had never heard this song. I was so locked in to my music choices at the time, I didn't even hear this song even if it did play on the radio.
If it wasn't Billy Joel,Springsteen, Zeppelin ,Van Halen , the Who, Aerosmith or Peter Frampton, I did not listen. And that was just the 12 year old me.
It is quite possible that WPLJ did not play Starbuck, but I am sure WABC did.

sidebar: Did the group "Starbuck" have anything to do with the coffee?

Point of all this?

There is just a Sh**-Tonne of good music made in my time that I have yet to hear.

When I hear a song that some how was off my radar when it was first released,
I consider it a gift.

Check it. The muse that triggered this tangent:

The old-school music is the best to hear, to be quite honest. No bullshit lyrics, no retarded people singing, just people talking about life.

Shut up, Rob! Are you kidding me?

Man, you were missing the best of the best then!

No Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jim Croce, Jethro Tull, ZZ Top, ELO, Deep Purple, Janis Joplin, The Allman Brothers, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, T.Rex, Jimi Hendrix, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Traffic, Gary Glitter, The Rolling Stones, BTO, REO Speedwagon, The Eagles, ELO, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Black Sabbath, Three Dog Night, The Doors, The Kinks, David Bowie, The Beatles, Golden Earring, Steve Miller Band, Elton John, Queen or The Hollies? Just to mention to mention a few, LOL!

Whoa! I'm perplexed! The seventies turned out the best music ever!

Man, you've mssed a lot! Why not tell us what kind of music you like and the rest of us will try to post oldies we think you'll like that you might not have heard. Great way to discover some "new" old music, I'd guess. The collective music intelligence in the OT is quite impressive.

      Whoa! Pbhththttttt! Easy Horsies! WhOA!

Of course, Terra. All those and more! I was just referring to the 12 year old me.
The beatles, doors and stones were on the 8 year old me's radar.
I'm talking 3 45s' that got almost completely worn.(bonus points if you can guess the three songs )

And Mr. G, the unfamiliar are few and far between, that was why I took such great delight in discovering Starbuck today.

Okay Dennis, 1976 is covered. Surprise me with 1977.
The 13 year old me,hmm. Ted Nugent, Boston, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the rest of the groups from my 12 year old self.
Work with that my friend, and I'll check your suggestions, and see if there is some new ones on me.

Whew! I was a little worried there.

        Hmmm,

Okay, here's a stab in the dark...

The Beatles ~ With a Little Help From My Friends

Doors ~ Riders On The Storm

        Stones ~ Brown Sugar

        So, how'd I do?

    Rob,
try to stay up on the different music threads in OT and you will hear a lot you've never heard before I bet, especially from that time.
I have posted Starbuck's song several times in the past.
I'll be more than happy to step up to the challenge too.

I don't think I EVER heard of this group before, but I HAVE heard this song sung THIS way(It MUST have been this group). I forget the story behind starbucks name BUT, as I recall, it had nothing to do with this song.

But if I want to listen to every song I considered decent when I was a kid, it would take a LONG time. a LONG time. So I won't even try.

It's ok. I guess some of the licks, the kind of sliding melody, etc... Kind of make it.

I checked out the lyrics. They are pretty specific. It is like a guy went to baltimore and met a lady that graduated in 1974 from missisippi, had a great night, and started a group to write a song about it! His car was a convertible! BTW it was #3 in 1976, which is probably why I heard it.

At that time frame music was still regional for the most part. What I eard in Virginia may not be the same as what you heard wherever you were.
Now I don't know if it was regional or another reason, but Boz Scags was new to you,but dude, almost every song on that albums was a major hit where I was from. You couldn't get away from Boz at the time. Obviously this is moe recent than the 70s,but he can still knock it out of the park. How many bands can you say sound this good live nowadays?

More 70s? How about this? Ever heard Nils before? This is early 70s so might definitely be out of your listening range.Even if it is, I think you might like it

Rob - I'm pretty sure that's not the same Blackfoot band that did Train Train and others.

Also, Redbone was a Native American rock band, thus the "Indian theme" you cited. Here's another one for you.

I'd say Dennis picked the Best Spirit album to listen to. The Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus is great all the way through.
    For the wiki ,go here.
They were an interesting band, with a Stepfather and son both playing in it.
Their first major song was I Got A Line On You.
Jay Ferguson went off solo and had a minor? hit with Thunder Island.

The Redbone song I think I heard first was Come And Get Your Love.

I've seen that page, Rob. I've also seen sites saying they are two different bands. What I do know is you won't find that song listed on any Blackfoot albums on that Wiki page, nor is the song listed anywhere on the official Blackfoot site. Are you seeing something I missed?

Sidenot:, I had a heck of a time finding that song because I had only heard it once back in 1970 or so, and I thought the DJ said it was "Bombed Out" rather than "Bummed Out."

Sidenot:, I had a heck of a time finding that song because I had only heard it once back in 1970 or so, and I thought the DJ said it was "Bombed Out" rather than "Bummed Out."

Are familiar with Savoy Brown, Tens Years After, or Wishbone Ash?
As far as The Blackfoot thing, I think that is Rickey Medlocke on bummed out.

Kim Simmonds and Savoy Brown, got a great story bout them...

Back in '80 something, Saw them live at Brassys NiteClub in Cocoa Beach.
It was an unusual summer storm in the fact that it hung around well after sunset, somewhat an anomaly here. There was maybe 20 people in the bar. ( the place had a 1200 seat capacity). The storm was raging right up to curtain call.
Being a Pro, Kim got on stage and on with the show. After the 2nd song,he came up to the Mic and said " Look, if its ok with everyone, we are gonna take a break till the storm passes, I just felt F***ing lightning in my teeth" No one objected.
He came back on bout an hour later, was loose and awesome!

Ten Years After-Yup,got some on the hard drive

Wishbone Ash- Heard of 'em, you could remind me.

You sir, have excellent taste in music!

For me, Wishbone Ash was "mood" music. If you were in the right mood they were great; if not, they were just another band. Hard to explain.

Rob - Cool story. Reminds me of when I saw Nugent in St. Louis. He was bent way over backwards like he was doing the limbo and playing when he hyperventalated. He passed out. Dropped straight to the floor. The guitar bounced off his chest. A bunch of people rushed to him, and in a minute or two took him off stage. Someone came out and said he was OK and the show would go on.

About 20 minutes later he was back, and to make up for it played for well over two hours. Most awesome!

Speaking of concerts, the guys below put on a great show back in the day. You'll never guess who they were the warm-up band for ... Sly and the Family Stone. Most of the people I know thought Sly was a let-down after seeing Mason Proffit.

Only just yesterday got round to playing it and can't take the
damn thing off It's in MTV style 'heavy rotation'

    Rob,
Tommy Bolin was also with (for a short time) The James Gang. I saw them while he was with them. Weird show, had Tim Buckley on the same bill.

One of my favorite artists from that time you probably at least know his 80s work, but Here is a song that got me interested in him. Ok, the clip is really three songs but all good. From his first solo album,Sneaking Sally Through the Alley

    Edit:
I just realized I met both Tim Buckley and Robert Palmer. Didn't have the luck to Meet Tommy Bolin, All three of these performers died way too young.

Tim Buckley was a folk singer in the 60s,and I am not sure how to classify his music during his life when I was listening to it,but it was "different".
In my opinion his best album was Greetings From LA, a very politically uncorrect album at the time.Of course we didnt use the term politically incorrect back then.
He dies young of a overdose.
His son had a few chart topping songs in the 90s I think but he also died very very young. Some say it was drugs for him too,but others say he was clean. Some thing we will never know.

TRIVIA TIME: After Riot's first two albums (Rock City and Narita - both worth checking out if you can find them. Second hand stores may be the best bet, or eBay), they recorded Fire Down Under (from which Outlaw was taken).

Obviously inspired by the early 80's metal scene in the UK, they beefed up the metalicity, or metalness if you like for F.D.U.

Their record company at the time refused to release it, saying "it was TOO heavy". They then sent tapes of it to a weekly UK music paper (Sounds) who were responsible for bands like Iron Maiden, Motörhead and others getting reported about.

One of Sounds journalists wrote about the ban on the album, and gave it a 5 star review, which inspired the company to eventually release it.

I still remember the headline of the article because it's one of the best ever!

Shh... once I learned the kind of songs he liked I just went for songs I thought fit that slant on his tastes.

A lot of music industry experts have missed on a lot of bands and sounds. Great headline though.

I've never heard of Riot that I can remember. That's some obscure Spooky Tooth and I haven't seen Legs Diamond named anywhere in ages.

Here is a song that has been recorded by numerous people and bands, but I bet you've never heard a version like this.

Kim, that was the first Spooky Tooth album I bought, might have been the only one, I'd have to check the boxes in the basement. Since Rob liked the Wishbone Ash, Dust, and Budgie songs I played, I'm trying to use those as a guide.

I've heard of the Bonzo Dog Band, but never that song. It's .. uh .. different.

Actually, Cottage Cheese and Slow Down came out in 1970, so they do qualify. I can't help it if Evil Woman (1969) was included in the compilation. I don't know when Busy Day came out, so it may or may not qualify.

But, I'm feeling constricted by your rules now anyway, so I'm outta here! :p
