After a recent report said people with more body fat have less chance of dying than those of normal weight, some skeptics are saying we need to change how we measure body fat.

The BMI was ALWAYS MORONIC!!!!!! Anyone with half a brain knew that! HERE are the ways!

    1. Insurance standard! DUMB! It assumes ALL fit a certain template. a lot of healthy people are excluded, and unhealthy included. Sex is REGOGNIZED! FORGET IT!
    2. Water! GREAT, but requires a large tank! Measures weight versus displacement, so sex is immaterial FORGET IT!
    3. Calipers! FINE, but easy to make a mistake! Recognizes sex! I think it is too hard.
    4. US NAVY!!!!!!!!!! THIS one I think is the winner! EASY, RELIABLE, TRUSTED, will say arnold swartzenegger was healthy, and a 90lb weekling should bulk up. Recognizes sex!

    Male BF%=495/(1.0324-0.19077(log(w-n))+0.15456(log(h)))-450
    Female BF%=495/(1.29579-0.35004(log(w+h-n))+0.22100(log(h)))-450
    Variables n = neck, h = height, w = waist, h = hips

I guess people figure it is too complicated!

HEY, you COULD use THIS: Body Fat (US Navy) Calculator

    5. BMI MORONIC It assumes there is ONE sex, and ONE template! The dumbest one yet, but it only requires 2 numbers and relatively simple math.
    6. Electronic. Supposed to be OK, but requires some settings and best case is supposed to be off by 3%. I think it could use some work. ALSO, it MAY be a simple refinement on BMI, though more precise. It recognizes sex and that not all follow the same template.

  • I tried the Navy calculator link but it's not calculating for me. Could be because I disabled Java? I'll try it again tomorrow.

WOW, I thought java was disabled there for me, but you might be right. Just look here:

One is BOUND to work for you. Anyway, the navy is happy with it, and it seems to cover everything. ALSO, the had a large diverse group to test it out with.

Frankly, I think the BMI was just to come up with something that easily fit THEIR idea of the perfect weight assuming way too much. The BMI shouldn't even have been released.
