When I was a kid, $175 could buy a VERY fancy metal detector! Come to me when they use one of the low end radioshack KITs. Do they even make those anymore? They used to have kits, and one cost like $10-$20 and was a METAL DETECTOR! Of course, it was like the cheapest and least efficient you could develop. The primary goal was to be a kit and teach the theory.

BTW I always thought finding such a NUGGET was near impossible. So many things are at work to keep them rather small. Is he sure that wasn't a mine of something? Gold is often layered in rock, so if you look enough you may find a mineral mine that has gold VEINS running through it. That USED to be relatively easy BUT, of course, most have been picked clean by now. Towards the end of the 20th century, hydromining and refining was probably the preferred method. It is relatively easy and safe AND, in the right area, effective. MOST of the gold may not be seen until the end of the process though, and it can be expensive.

Hmmmm, Ballarat is a 2 hour drive for me, maybe l should dust off my metal detector, and head for the hills!!!!

Or, maybe l should wait till, the weather turns colder, no point walking around in the bush, when a bushfire could start up!

Must have hit 42 degrees today, and eventhough l could see smoke, on the horizon, it was thankfully a long way off. But it still had burnt about 80 hectares of bush in a national forest!

How to blow your amateur status to bits

The world's largest nugget was also found in Australia using a metal detector. A person had ordered one and was just trying it out around his trailer when he found it. This was about 20 years ago and I read about it offline. That one sold for just over a million because of it's size.

Finds like that are rare anywhere, but they do happen. Automatic gold processing pans are my best seller on my site. Unfortunately, most people will never catch on to how to prospect to put much, if anything, in the pan.

If this gets your nose open and you are thinking about starting to prospect - do yourself a favor and stay away from places that "teach" tourists to pan. It ain't the same animal as you are looking at in the field. Find an experienced prospector and tag along with them or at least have them show ya how it's done. It's not as easy as just going out and pulling up nuggets.

I have 75 acres of land that has a creek on the back property line. About 3 miles downstream there's an old abandoned gold mine from the late 1800's, approx. another 3 miles upstream, maybe 1/4 mile away from the same creek a few guys found a decent amount of gold, less than 4 years ago. The creek water level gets really low in the summer months, in the winter months the water moves pretty quick. I've thought about getting a metal detector & looking around when the water level drops, then again I've been here 12 years & haven't took the time to look (lol). Anyways, my property is 1/2 way between two proven sources of gold.

Might have an article on my Gazette about Gold traps. Sounds like you might do yourself some favors by setting a few. You realize you will need a very powerful machine to detect small nuggets or dust. Scan for the big ones, but don't quit there because most of it will be small particles.
