I'm not a heavy metal lover, but a friend of mine sent me a link to this video:

First I thought it was only guys. But after some research I realized that the vocalist actually is a she and that's her voice!

It feels like I've lost my manhood after listening to this...

If she was my girlfriend, I hadn't dared commanded her out to the kitchen to make a sandwich for me. And I would for sure leaved her alone if she had stolen my bacon.

Me thinks you would BE the bacon!
And BTW I like metal, this is a little to guttural for me.

    I hate that shit!
    It's just noise.
And, I imagine that the vocals have been subjected to electrical alteration.

Thoroughly agree, and I'm a metal-head from way back. That is way back when metal had a sense of melody/music/a tune to it.

Think of all the old school metal bands (before it was called metal), Sabbath, Zeppelin, Purple, Priest, Rainbow, UFO, Rush, Budgie, etc., etc.. Each had a unique singer with their own distinctive style. Even if you'd never heard the song before, you could immediately tell who it was as soon as the vocals started.

Can anyone tell these types of bands apart? I certainly can't.

In fact it was the rise of shit like this that drove me away from metal and in to prog-rock.

I can. This one is more intense than I like, though. You can still tell them apart from others.

I have to agree Larry. That is not his/her natural voice. ( I'm not convinced it is a she).
I have to admit I could only manage listening half way through the song and had to stop it.

That IS the sound a lot of metal bands go for though. But every band that I have heard with that sound, the singer was male.

Yeah it's a girl. It's either Sharlee or Angela.

I like metal. Seriously like metal - however, I'm not fond of the rage sound if it's rage all the way through with no melody interspersed in with it. I think it's harder for a woman to make a sound like that than a man so I don't think she'd be able to go between rage and melody.

Not my favorite metal band, but I'll listen to them without qualms if that's what's playing.

I'm with the "can't stand" group here.
I'd say it would have to be Angela as it clearly shows the "lead singer" singing in with the "noise" coming out as opposed to the bass player .
I still do not think she is making that noise with out electronic enhancement.

There is a difference between music and noise...... what they are doing is making noise.

      That's pretty funny Rob.
My nephew and ex son in law were in a metal band together .I've actually posted a song by then a couple of times. My son in law was famous for getting non paying gigs for the band.
I told them that they had to put monetary value on their time and talents if they ever wanted to get ahead.
His reply back to me every time?

        I can relate. We had a sign in our studio;

NO MORE BENEFITS,PARTYS,SHOWCASES OR TALENT SHOWS.
OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT PAYS US JACKSHIT!

We did sooo many non paying gigs in the beginning.
Of course there were certain, shall we say, fringe benefits
But it got to the point of ridiculous,so we made the above agreement.

        Shinguh is very talented,BTW!

Thanks Rob.That's my nephew playing the V.
While the first band (with my son in law singing) I couldn't stand. It sounded like the OPs band.
When he went to Shinguh, I lsitend and thought the guy could sing and the band sounded great. I even bought their one (at the time, they may have more by now) song New Direction, off ITunes.

Sounds to me that the singer(?) is just screaming into the microphone which can cause distortion of the lyrics.
I like Heavy metal, and I want to hear the lyrics clearly, not just some sore throat belching.

So soothing, a veritable feminine massage to the ears. Her delicate mannerisms and grace remind of those of my past girlfriend Fleur Fragile of France who I met in Belize, where she was studying classical harpsichord under the tutelage of Dame Grande D'Harmonie. Alas, my crude mannerisms were such that our relationship could not last.

DISCLAIMER: I've never had a girlfriend called Fleur Fragile and have never been to Belize.

    Total 'YUK' - canned even.

Coulda been almost every other so-called 'heavy metal', 'headbanger', 'thrasher' "band" - really disgusting cookie cutter

It has to be a very pretty man with make-up.
and yes "his" name could very well be Angela or whatever.

    Definitely a gender-bender

Or a woman? with serious issues (smoker's cancer? going through a sex change?)

    spare me.

My comments remain the same - could be a guy/girl or a girl/guy

(forgive me I spent most of my life in San Francisco)

But seriously what I did want to add to my first post (realized this in the shower) -

No offense to 'metal heads' -

Most people hate my favorite rock genre, PUNK - and that is only part of why it is dead.

The others are THEY WANTED TO BE HATED, AND they were creative (and not in it for the money) and in my opinion especially the drummers were just out of this world backwards = excellent.

... and of course I loved the first 10 metal bands that every body went on to 'COVER' READ COPY - and the first 100 rock and roll bands that were EMULATED by 10000 subsequent bands.

COME ON SHE HAS TO BE GUY.

I can name a list of em:

    Disturbed
    Korn
    Rob Zombie
    Drowning Pool
    Puddle of Mudd
    Il Nino
    No One
    Uno
    Skin Dred
    Rhomstein
    Tool
    Nickel Back
    Slip Knot
The list goes on. I LOVE metal - started loving metal in the late 60's and never stopped, no matter how it's progressed. Always will love it. Just because there are a few really bad bands around doesn't mean it's all crap. There's bad bands in every genre of music.

You certainly caught me off guard,Sal.

Like to walk on the dark side,do we?NoT many Chicks do.

SlipKnot totally surprised me, I can only handle them in small doses.

2 Bands on your list have no business being on your list,though...

Puddle of Mud is out of place, although an excellent band, none the less.

      NickelBack is just an insult.
I am hoping it was a typo
, and you meant Nickel Bag.

      And one last nit-picky,
Its Raamstein. They are more Industrial type, like Ministry.

Sorry - if it doesn't show up in spell check on a forum, I don't look for it.

And No - I meant Nickel Back: Rage isn't the only sound in this type of music - it's the most distinctive - but it's not the only one - remember synergy is music. This is the softer sound of metal - and most bands do one or two soft rock no matter how hardcore they are.

Maybe Puddle of Mudd is a LITTLE off - but it applies to what I said above. They have the general all over sound, though they are mellower than others.

Arch Enemy actually has skilled instrumentalists. I'm not convinced the vocalist is good but maybe it is just too alien to my ears to tell. I watched a few of their songs and she sang in that what-- Mongolian throat-singing? -- way in all of them. Does she never sing in any other way? Technically, the instrumentalists are good.
