They CAN do a lot of damage, and are crazy enough to try. They may have gotten a standing ovation for that.

They could do a lot of damage, but I'm thinking the US is watching North Korea very closely. The difference between North Korea & the US is, we have military all over the world, it's not confined to a single Geo location like the Korean peninsula. North Korea would also have to launch their rocket directly over Japan, I doubt that would go over very well.

They could throw a curve ball over the pole, and put it right over home plate - D.C.! -
(heck, the way things are going...we might not even mind that - we can just start from scratch! )

One thing's for sure, If a North Korean rocket hits US soil, someone (Gov) on the US side would have to let it happen. There's absolutely no excuse for a rocket to even get 1/2 way over the Pacific heading towards the US.

MAYBE it was 20 or 25. I didn't actually time it. And I bought the last one there. Another bought the one just before me, and we talked as our background checks cleared.

    I'm not worried.......

The US of A has a bunch of "secret" weapons from SDI..... I doubt the missiles would make it 3/4 the way here before being shot down...

No it is not an act of war! look at the missles the U.S put on the border of russia, and germany. Is this not an act of war on part of the U.S, but still there is no war with russia. The U.S may not like them, but still they will never have a war. They might steal each other secrets though. North korea on the other hand is a diffrent story.Japan is more likely to get bombed than the U.S is. North Korea will never bomb the U.S,it will never get that far.Other countrys will stop the rockets befour they ever get there.

Looks like North Korea has a death wish. They make that move and they will be eradicated from the earth period. Wouldn't be very smart at all. They must be willing to sacrifice their whole country for this ideal, because that's exactly what they would be doing.

Good thing to know that nobody has any interest in blowing up a place like Arkansas. There! I found something good about it! lol

They were too dumb to legalize MJ, but at least they are too insignificant for anyone to want to blow us up!

    Thank God for that.

We will never sit down for them harming South Korea or Japan I would hope.

What do you mean? We put missles on the border of Russia and Germany? You mean we PARKED them? I do not think you mean we fired them or announced that we were particularly aiming for them?

I could be wrong because I am not "up" on all that data.

I just think if Pudgy is going to act threateningly and create 'terror' then he needs to be 'deposed' - (and however that needs to happen, the sooner the better) -

He is a threat to peace and possibly an INSANE MANIAC with a DANGEROUS WMD.

Germany had US military bases there since a bit after WWII. And several times, including one several years ago, we had missiles aimed at russia. They weren't actually USED though.

Well, after WWII nuclear bombs were declared OFF LIMITS! If NK does that, there could be international sanctions up to a world war. Hopefully NK is big enough tat the US can just send a little bomb there and blow up the government. But we wouldn't want to hurt SK. If it were m, I'd use the stealth bombers and blow up key parts of the military, weapons, and government with conventional weapons.

all i should say about these things is i hope nothing bad happens.

because one thing always leads to another and i sure don't want to get china mad at us - so hopefully someday they will DISCIPLINE him - and that might have an even bigger effect on them than 'boycotts' or 'sanctions' from us and our allies. I don't think they want to mess with China either...

so yeah all that silly school yard bully stuff i just need to shine it on -

When their enemy is perceived to be led by a weak leader it emboldens them to make such a threat, especially when their enemy's military is being dismantled against the wishes of the sane population that did not vote for that weak leader.

What do they have? A land based launching system? What a laugh. That's sooo 1950's

Probably not a submarine based launching system. That's so 1960's, and they easily cost a billion, plus change.

Of course, they are for defensive purposes only, that's why their capable of being put on small, harmless looking ships

Possibly. Those commercials don't say it takes two years to fire after initiating the launch sequence, or they would never be sold.

They DO say they MIGHT! They can be placed in strategic areas waiting patiently for a message. AND, with GPS, they DON'T need to know their orientation. Ironically, that IS what GPS was made for! Originally it was a US military device for targetting.

I think people have misconceptions about the possibility of defence against attack by an ICBM.

      Simply put, there is none.

They don't come 'at you' through the atmosphere like an aircraft does... they basically drop on your head from orbit at several thousand miles an hour.

That's why even the most outlandish stuff in Reagan's SDI (most of which never worked) was intended to target them just after they were launched - that's the only time they are potentially vulnerable, and even that is only for a few minutes (at best). (Note the recent Russian threats to destroy the (now-cancelled) US "missile shield" based in Poland unless they could station officers at the site... it was simply too close to their fixed launch sites to not be considered a threat).

That's why both sides in the Cold War adopted the MAD doctrine in the first place (i.e. "we can't stop you nuking us but, if you do, we can still nuke you back").

That's also why existing nuclear powers go to such lengths to stop other countries "joining the club" but, once they do, the threats, sanctions, etc. evaporate. That even happens among allies (e.g. it happened between the US and the UK right after WW2).

Originally Posted by Patrician View Post

You should look up background to the Cuban Missile Crisis: The reason the US would have been willing to go to war over the presence of missiles in Cuba is (almost) the same reason the Russians were willing to attack the Polish "missile shield" mentioned above. It's also noteworthy that the Soviets didn't agree to back down until the US agreed to remove it's missiles from Turkey... again, the reasons are pretty much the same.

Originally Posted by Dustin Lyle View Post

Doubt it, unless the Chinese agree (which they won't; expecting them to be ok with a US-occupied North Korea would be like expecting the US to be ok with a Chinese-occupied Canada or Mexico... it simply won't happen). Look at the last time the US was in North Korea; it, the South Koreans, and the UN forces all thought they were about to be victorious... and then a million Chinese troops poured over the border (and that was before China was a nuclear power).

      No, 'fraid not.

The South Koreans do though, as do the Japanese. However, the problem is that the missile defences of both countries are designed to intercept short-range stuff fired at them, not the US. Neither could intercept a missile fired from North Korea on a trajectory aimed at the United States.

The US could try to intecept it as it falls back into the atmosphere, but imagine someone fired a bullet at your head... and the only way you could stop it was to try hitting it with another, smaller, bullet... and you could only fire when it was a few feet from your head... and you weren't certain exactly what direction to fire in... and, even if you do manage to hit it, that might only be a decoy bullet... the real one is actually over there, and still heading for you

That's the level of difficulty involved. It could be done in theory... but I, personally, wouldn't want to bet money on it.

By the way, that assumes anyone can be sure it is actually an attack.

You should google the so-called "Black Brant scare" in the 90s: Basically, a research rocket launched from Norway appeared on Russian radar with the exact speed and trajectory that suggested it was actually a missile launched by a submarine as the opening shot of appeared to be an imminent nuclear attack by the US.

However, by the time they could make sure wasn't an attack, 8 of the 10 minutes alloted to deciding whether to launch their missiles against the US in response had already elapsed!

In other words: You need to be really, really, really, really sure!

Unfortunately, Thomas is mostly right. We REALLY have only a small time to stop an ICBM. If it DOES go high up, and come down, as he says, all we could do is send a similar missile with a primary goal to hit the missile, and a secondary one to attack the aggressor. It may not even hit the missile BUT, to hit it, the US missile would likely have to be faster. And who knows what the implications would be of an explosion that high up.

We couldn't use a plane, and I don't think we have the ability to us sattelites for this. We COULD use a submarine or destroyer to gain a bit of an advantage though, with ICBMs. It could ALSO obliterate NK so the world has time to say good riddance and celebrate before the US is hit by the first missile.

We can't REALLY hit it right at the launch, because we wouldn't know where it was going. We can't hit it within say a minute or so of it taking off because the radiation could spread all over.
