Some people tried to escape when the fire started but security stopped them and wouldn't let them leave because of an unpaid bar tab...

'Complete panic' as 232 killed in Brazil nightclub fire

You have to wonder about things like this.

Wouldn't the time to require emergency exits, ban using fire inside the building and limiting capacity to the legal limit.....be before a tragedy occurs?

What the point in occupancy limits if an owner can ignore them?
What idiot would allow flares to be used in a crowded building?
Stopping people from leaving means no emergency procedures in place.

I'd say the band and the owner have serious liability here - and deserve every bit of it.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

  • Wow - I read this story earlier, but for some reason (maybe it was a different story) I totally missed that about the bar tabs...I actually thought you were making a cruel joke at first. (sorry for the assumption)
And what happened in the last 'biggest nite club fire', in the Phillippines? Uh, the same thing wasn't it?

There's been numerous fires that started over Pyrotechnics gone wrong. This is why the majority of places have an emergency exit and a sprinkler system. Apparently this place did not.. I'm sure the Owner will have some kind of action against him.

I'm not sure how the laws in Brazil work.

    Wow. How very sad.

I just heard on news radio that the owner fled as word of the tragedy spread.

The "bar tab" story sound a bit like a side story to me. It may be the very first people trying to leave were stopped for that but I doubt they were trying to stop anyone once they saw what was happening.

That may have been what created a log-jam and kept the rest from getting out, though.

There's a section of interstate locally that is the site of a fair number of multi-car crashes (a few over 50 vehicles), and it's always just the first one that starts the chain reaction. Having "worked the door" a fair bit in my youth, I can see where this could spiral out of control if the bouncers weren't paying enough attention and slowed things down.

Just had a near 100 car pile up recently.

The reason? One car hit ice and spun around backwards. Had that car not have spun out of control, it probably would have never happened.

            Corey,

That's how it happens on the stretch I mentioned. That part of I-90 freezes and gets really slick at times, even when nothing else is. People don't expect it, and they skid out.

Doesn't help that it's right at the busiest on-ramp in town, and people typically go 10-20 MPH over the limit through that section.

This has been going on for years. Like the one reported on here that happened in Montreux Switzerland back in 1972.

    I heard it was 245, not 232.

Anyway, it was indeed a very tragic incident and I hope Brazilian night club operators get serious from now on.

  • Three Arrested in Connection with Brazil Nightclub Fire

    Robert Kessler

Brazilian authorities have arrested three people with ties to the nightclub fire that killed at least 233 people yesterday. They are one of the club's co-owners, the chief of security and a member of the band Gurizada Fandangueira, which was performing when the fire broke out. Police are also apparently searching for Kiss nightclub's other owner as well.
Police insist the arrests are solely for questioning, but a co-owner of Kiss has reportedly confirmed that the club's safety certificate expired last year. If this is true, the club's ownership could be held responsible for the fire, which is the deadliest of its kind since a fire at a club in China killed more than 300 people. It is also the deadliest fire in Brazil in five decades.
This morning Billboard reports Gurizada Fandangueira, which played about once a month at Kiss, was known for its use of pyrotechnics during live performances. uploaded last May shows sparks flying as the band performs. All the members of the band except accordion player Danilo Jaques escaped the nightclub.
