Please help with a Mac question.

Hello:

I drive a Mac, a MAC OS X

My eight year old grandson loves the computer and I let him use it more than I do. However, sometimes he does things I cannot fix. Today is an example.

Somehow he has turned on the voice that tells me each and every thing i do. It never ends and it drives me crazy. I have to leave the sound off and so now cannot listen to music while I work.

Someone please tell me how to turn the damn thing off.

    system preferences>speech>text to speech tab

    Open "System Preferences" in the Apple Menu in the top left corner of your screen.

    Click on Universal Access and under the Seeing tab, turn off "VoiceOver".

    That ought to do it, if you're describing what I think you are.

    Good luck and don't worry - it's an easy fix.

      I really do thank you for writing but my Mac has no references to voice/over at all. I can find the icon for speech but it has no way to turn the thing off. I would hate to have to buy a new computer but I am not going to put up with this at all.

      I like music when I work and now I cannot as it will give me a description of every button I push and constantly tells me where I am with the assumption that I don't know.

      Can anyone help me?

        What operating system are you running? Mountain Lion? Try pressing cmd f5 to and see if that work.

    The setting that has been turned on is designed to assist visually impaired users.

    Generally, all of these types of system options live in your "System Settings" panel that you access under the Apple Menu.

    Earlier versions of MacOS X may have a different name for that particular setting, I don't remember anymore, honestly.

    But look through each of the control panels in your System Settings (if only to familiarize yourself with what and where they are) and you'll find the troublesome setting.

    It was likely triggered by a "hot key" - a combination of keys pressed simultaneously that acts as a shortcut for toggling certain settings on and off.

        There. I have it now. Thank you very much. I do appreciate it. My grandson is eight and I always encourage him to spend time on the computer. He does. In fact, he often does not want to go outside as he would rather be on the computer.

        I think he will someday be a world class computer expert.

        That is a reasonable expectation.
